Sylvester Stallone, 75, to star as mob boss in drama series Kansas City… in what will be his first leading man role for TV

Sylvester Stallone is taking on a new role as leading man in a scripted television series.

The three-time Oscar nominee has been tabbed to play a mob boss in the upcoming Paramount+ drama, Kansas City, from Taylor Sheridan (Yellowstone) and Terence Winter (The Sopranos, Boardwalk Empire), according to Deadline.

This will mark the first time that the Rocky and Rambo actor has ever starred in the lead role of a TV series during his 50-plus-year career in show business, dating back to 1968.

Moving to TV: Sylvester Stallone, 75, will star in the drama series Kansas City, which will be his first lading man role for a television series during his 50-plus-year career

Stallone had several television roles during the start of his career, guest starring on such classic shows such as Police Story (1975) and Kojak (1975).

During that time, he struggled to land a film role that was more than a cameo role or work as an extra.

But that would all change when he won his first critical acclaim as an actor for his co-starring role as Stanley Rosiello in The Lords of Flatbush (1974).

And just two years later, Stallone would see his star shot to the highest peak with the success of the boxing drama, Rocky (1976), which he wrote, directed and starred in the title role

Having done very few scripted TV roles since the early 1970s, the New York native played himself in the Deja Vu episode of the hit series This Is Us (2017).

In Kansas City, the story follows a New York City Italian mobster (Stallone), who’s forced to relocate to one of the most unlikely of places— Kansas City, Missouri, according to the series synopsis.

Set in present day, Stallone’s legendary mobster Sal is faced with the startling task of reestablishing his Italian mafia family to the modernized, straight-shooting town of Kansas City.

After arriving in the Midwest city, Sal encounters surprising and unsuspecting characters who follow him along his unconventional path to power.

Sheridan, Winter and Stallone will serve as executive producers with David C. Glasser, Ron Burkle and Bob Yari of 101 Studios. Winter, an Oscar nominee for his screenplay for Wolf of Wall Street, will also run the show as showrunner, and a writers room is up and running.

On Monday afternoon, Stallone took to his Instagram page to share a little know fact about the casting of Rocky that many fans might not know about.

‘For people that are into little known FACTS , here’s one,’ he began in the caption of a photo showing himself in boxing shorts standing next to a man several inches taller.

‘I don’t remember this gentleman’s name but until Carl Weathers showed up , this fella was going to play Apollo Creed! Fate or just bad luck?’ he explained.

Bad luck indeed, considering Weathers would go on to gain worldwide recognition as Apollo in Rocky and the three of the sequels: Rocky II 91979), Rocky III (1982) and Rock IV (1985).
