The Croods 2 takes the top prize at the Thanksgiving weekend box office among disappointing receipts

The Croods: A New Age took the top spot at the Thanksgiving weekend box office after making its debut on Wednesday.

The animated family comedy earned $9.71 million domestically, along with $14.22 million globally, according to Variety.

Although the earnings were impressive for the pandemic box office, it was a disappointing haul compared to the usually health Thanksgiving returns of previous years.

The Croods 2 also had the advantage of being the only new major film arriving in theaters in the US, as the major film studios have shuffled most of their high-profile projects to 2021.

‘This level of business is a far cry from typical Thanksgiving weekend releases, but success and failure in the middle of a pandemic should be viewed in relative terms,’ said Box Office Pro’s chief analyst Shawn Robbins.

The movie’s success suggests that parents are still interested in films that the whole family can watch together.

Although many viewers aren’t interested in visiting theaters in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, even those looking to see a film on the big screen aren’t able to in major markets.

Theaters remained closed in some cities, most notably Los Angeles and New York City, and others have been forced to close for financial reasons.

Mixed bag: The Croods 2 is on track to beat Tenet's record for the biggest opening weekend box office since theaters reopened, but it's still paltry compared to pre-pandemic times

Fewer options: In recent years, a big-budget film debuting at Thanksgiving would have played at around 4,000 theaters, but now The Croods 2 could only play at 2,211 venues

Still, The Croods 2’s distribution company Universal seemed pleased by the film’s success, as it could beat Tenet’s record for the best opening weekend since theaters reopened during the pandemic.

The Christopher Nolan thriller earned $9.35 million in its first three days.

‘To do the kind of business we’re doing under what is obviously a very difficult theatrical landscape is very gratifying,’ said Jim Orr, president of domestic distribution for Universal.

Robbins added: ‘For this film to outperform expectations in a less-than-half operational market indicates that moviegoers, especially families, miss the big screen experience and are seeking it out where safe and possible to do so. The industry still has a challenging road ahead through winter. But Croods’ debut is a preliminary sign of the resilience cinemas can show in the long run.’

China proved to be an important part of The Croods 2’s success internationally, as the country accounted for $19.2 million of the film’s $20.8 million international earnings.

Universal has been more willing to release films during the pandemic than the other major studies, as it signed a deal with AMC and Cinemark theaters to allow it to release films on pricey VOD platforms within weeks if it fails to earn enough in theaters in its opening weekend.

In turn, theaters earn a chunk of the profits from digital rentals.
