The Matildas thank The Wiggles for performing at their game against the US after fans blamed their devastating loss on the children’s entertainers


The Matildas have publicly thanked The Wiggles for performing at their match over the weekend after fans blamed the children’s musical group for the women’s soccer team’s loss against the United States.

In a post on Instagram on Sunday, the Matildas shared a short video of The Wiggles walking off the soccer field following their performance of the national anthem.

As they exited Sydney’s ANZ Stadium, Matildas coach Tony Gustavsson excitedly approached the group and offered each member a fist bump.

‘Thank you to @thewiggles for making yesterday even more special!’ the Matildas captioned the post on Instagram.

The Matildas lost to the US women’s team 3-0 during a disappointing soccer match on Saturday.

Following their defeat, some fans blamed The Wiggles, after they took many by surprise with their performance of the Australian national anthem.

‘They literally cursed the team wdym [what do you mean],’ one soccer fan commented on Instagram.

Other fans voiced their opinions on Twitter, criticising the popular children’s group and accusing their appearance at the game of being a bad idea.  

‘Watching the Matildas replay – everything went downhill after The Wiggles. First and last time?’ questioned one fan.

‘I blame The Wiggles!’ commented another, while one person tweeted, ‘Who the f**k thought The Wiggles was a good idea?’ 

But The Wiggles took it all in their stride, sharing a happy selfie of the group at the game on Instagram on Sunday.  

‘Had a wonderful time at @anzstadium today performing ahead of @matildas vs USA. Thank you all for watching,’ they wrote.
