The Pursuit of Love’s Emily Beecham talks about Lily James and Dominic West scandal

Emily Beecham has revealed she hasn’t given much thought to her new-found fame after starring in BBC‘s hit show The Pursuit of Love.

The actress, 37, who plays Fanny in the drama which premiered earlier this month, said she doesn’t think ‘people would be interested in chasing me around’, as she spoke out about her co-stars Lily James and married Dominic West’s scandal.

In a new interview with Grazia magazine, Emily said, despite the success of the period drama, she plans on keeping a low profile and her personal life private.

Back in October, Emily’s co-stars Lily, 32, and Dominic, 51, were caught passionately kissing during a weekend in Rome, leading to his wife Catherine FitzGerald assuring the public they were fine – but reportedly banning him from talking to the actress again.

When asked about the scandal between the pair, Emily said she has never experienced the same kind of focus in the spotlight.

‘Maybe that will happen now and I have to be prepared. But what can go wrong if you just keep a low profile, be nice and do your own thing?,’ she said. ‘I can’t imagine people would be really that interested in chasing me around.’

Emily went on to talk about the responsibility she felt to be featuring in a period drama and said she was very nervous to take on the role of Fanny.

One thing that helped her ease into the role though was her off-screen friendship with co-star Lily.

The pair would often Zoom each other before filming began, and when the cast finally met up in person, Emily said they all felt lucky to be able to be there together, given the pandemic.

Emily also touched upon the #MeToo movement during her interview and admitted that some of her friends had been told to go away and return to sets with more make-up on.

As such, she said she often tried to provide help to younger actresses.

She said: ‘I talk to young actress friends of mine and try to support them, because I didn’t really have anybody explaining that to me when I was younger or saying: “It probably gets better when you get older”.’

Looking ahead to her another of her projects, the upcoming film Cruella, Emily remained coy about her own character, but admitted that she had scenes with Emma Thompson, and gushed over Emma Stone, who plays the villain.

Earlier this month, Emily revealed that she was excited for viewers to watch the adaptation of the 1945 Nancy Mitford novel as it will afford them ‘compelling escapism’.

In an interview with Rollacoaster, the actress said: ‘I think The Pursuit of Love will be actually the tonic that people need right now. It is a complete departure from our time into the war period, which makes it really compelling escapism.

‘The Pursuit of Love was considered quite a radical book at the time when it came out and I think it still is in many ways. It is about sexual politics and adulthood and ageing and friendship and sex and ambition while also managing to be really funny.

‘Nancy Mitford’s writing is really witty and sharp, but she has a very satirical humour with edgier, darker undertones to it. The book was a favourite of many people of her writing.’

The Pursuit Of Love was filmed between July and October last year, with Lily and Dominic’s Italy trip taking place shortly after filming on the period drama wrapped.

While in the Italian city the duo were spotted putting on a very cosy display as they explored Rome and enjoyed lunch with their mutual agent Angharad Wood.

Following the snaps emerging, Dominic put on a public display of unity with his wife Catherine, with the couple releasing a statement about their marriage.

It read: ‘Our marriage is strong and we’re very much still together.’

Catherine is also said to have banned Dominic from speaking with the actress as part of a peace deal struck between the couple, according to The Mail On Sunday.

‘He has promised never to see, speak or work with Lily again,’ said a friend. There are also to be no joint promo interviews for the TV adaptation of Nancy Mitford’s novel.

Since the public scandal, Lily has found love with Queens of the Stone Age rocker Michael Shuman, 35, and has been pictured meeting his parents in the states.

She recently declined to discuss the media storm about Rome in an interview with The Guardian – but admitted there is in fact much to discuss, saying: ‘I’m not really willing to talk about that. There is a lot to say, but not now, I’m afraid.’
