The REAL reason Celeb Spellcheck shut down

The REAL reason Celeb Spellcheck shut down: Instagram account feared by influencers closed after ‘people tried to hunt down’ the mystery admin

The anonymous administrator behind the Celeb Spellcheck Instagram page feared by influencers across Australia has revealed why she retired the account in March.

The admin, who has wiped her archive of snarky posts and now only shares paparazzi photos from the mid-2000s, said during a Q&A with fans this week she decided to stop uploading ‘influencer content’ due to threats to expose her identity.

When asked if she would ever return to mocking typos and lazy sponsored content, the account’s owner said those days were well and truly behind her.

Stepping away: The anonymous administrator behind the Celeb Spellcheck Instagram page feared by influencers across Australia has revealed why she retired the account in March

She wrote: ‘I’m not going back to influencer content. As much as I think there needs to be a platform that calls out their bad behaviour, I never wanted to be the “authority” on all things influencer.

‘It got too stressful for me to run. There were too many eyes on me, articles being written about the account almost daily and people trying to hunt you down is scary.’

She also addressed her decision to ditch her old content in favour of posting photos of celebrities like the Olsen twins and Lindsay Lohan from the mid-2000s.

‘I’ve always been passionate about pop culture,’ the admin said.

‘I actually had another Insta which I used to post stuff on, so I thought I might as well use the audience I have on here to post stuff I actually enjoy.

‘I totally understand that’s not what people followed me for and I’m not offended if people unfollow if they’re not interested.’

The admin also revealed she’d received several big-money offers to buy her account when she announced Celeb Spellcheck’s retirement more than two months ago.

‘The amount of offers I got was insane! I didn’t even know this was a thing,’ she said.

‘Most offers came from micro influencers who were hoping to grow their following. The highest legitimate offer I got was just over five figures (and I seriously considered it). The most interesting offer was from a big influencer (500,000 followers) who was looking to change the name and launch a new business on it.’

Instead, she said she was taking a break to figure out the future of the account.

Celeb Spellcheck began a few years ago as an account making fun of poor spelling on sponsored Instagram posts, but later became a platform for holding influencers to account for their lies and irresponsible behaviour.

The profile was also a hub for user-submitted gossip, and notably once shared a video of Bachelor star Laurina Fleure snorting white powder at a party.

Due to the nature of its content, Celeb Spellcheck was criticised by a number of influencers, including Tayla Damir and Skye Wheatley.

The account made headlines last year when it shared a screenshot of model Elyse Knowles misspelling ‘voilà’ as ‘wallah’.

The gaffe went viral in December when it was picked up by U.S. social media sensation Joshua Ostrovsky, a.k.a. The Fat Jewish.
