The Voice star Johnny Manuel, 36, reveals his heartbreak at losing two family members and a close friend to Covid-19 in the United States

Johnny Manuel was a breakout star on The Voice Australia last year.

And the 36-year-old singer has now revealed he has lost several loved ones in America to Covid-19.

Speaking to The Daily Telegraph on Monday, Johnny confirmed two family members and a friend had died from the respiratory virus.

‘I have some family members who we lost, one was age 55,’ Manuel said.   

He went on to say his U.S.-based father, who is an essential worker, recently had close contact with a man who was Covid-positive.

‘My dad is considered an essential worker and just yesterday he got a call saying someone who he had been with all day tested positive so my dad had to go and get two tests done,’ he said.

‘It affects everyone in the U.S. unfortunately because it’s running rampant and they’re not doing a good job of managing it at this point,’ he added.

Johnny moved Down Under for love. He recently went independent with his music career, and spent most of last year writing new songs. 

‘I feel for my family and friends in the U.S. but I’m so happy to be here. I love the culture here I always have,’ he told the newspaper.

The singer worked with Guy Sebastian on The Voice, making it to the grand final of last year’s season on Channel Nine. 

During the finale, Johnny sang Sam Sparro’s 2008 hit single Black and Gold in a duet with Guy. 

He later sang My Heart Will Go On by Celine Dion. 

More recently, Johnny has been working on new music and is set to perform at Sydney’s Oxford Art Factory on June 18.
