He returned to Channel Nine’s Today show last year.

And on Thursday, Karl Stefanovic experienced a very awkward encounter on live television.

The 47-year-old had his improvisation skills put to the test after his earpiece stopped working.

After presenting his segment, newsreader Alex Cullen noticed something was not right and asked Karl: ‘Karl you OK over there?’

Karl then revealed he had to wear bright pink headphones because his earpiece had stopped working.

‘I have a few issues this morning just from a technological point of view and my mind is really not working,’ he said before joking he was trying to ‘listen to the races’.

‘I will have it rectified in the next fifteen minutes.’

His co-host Allison Langdon joked: ‘I like the idea of you doing the show while you can’t hear.’

It comes after Karl revealed he has been stacking on the kilos during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Radio host Brendan Fevola, 40, revealed on the Fifi, Fev & Nick breakfast show on Tuesday he’d gained ‘at least 17 to 18 kilos’ during Melbourne‘s extended lockdown.

Today anchor Karl, 47, called in from Sydney and admitted he’d put on maybe ’12, 13 [kilos]’ as a result of the stay-at-home orders.

‘I guess I should do something about it. I just can’t be bothered,’ Karl laughed.

He continued: ‘You know what I’m saying to myself now to justify all of this? “Eventually we’ll come out of this, Karlos, so you may as well eat and drink what you want until you come out of it.”‘
