Tones and I has revealed why fans will never see her perform in a raunchy music film clip like Ariana Grande

Speaking to  Today‘s entertainment reporter Brooke Boney on Tuesday, the 27-year-old hitmaker, whose real name is Toni Watson, explained that she prefers to play larger-than-life characters in her videos.   

‘I’m so boring. I don’t want to play myself,’ she said. 

‘What am I going to do? Sing along and roll around on a bed like Ariana?’    

‘That’s not me. I have to do something different,’ she added.

Tones And I is known for wearing elaborate costumes in her music videos, having dressed up as an old man in the clip for her iconic song Dance Monkey.

Similarly, in her clip for Ur So F**king Cool, she portrays several different characters, including a makeup influencer, a hippie, a hipster and a cosmetic enhancement enthusiast.  

The busker-turned-ARIA Award winner also called making music videos the ‘best thing’ to create after writing a song. 

‘My film clips are the best thing,’ she boasted. ‘As soon as I finish a song I’m like oh my god, I don’t know, I’m so excited.’

But she noted that her music videos can be quiet a hassle, especially when it comes to the makeup and prosthetics that are required to transform her into different charactesr. 

‘I don’t know why I put myself – my skin through – all this stuff, it’s just so much fun,’ she said.

Elsewhere, the singer discussed her sudden rise to popularity, saying she ‘doesn’t know’ where it comes from.

‘It’s definitely not that I’m a fashion trend-setter. It’s definitely not that I’m a teen icon. I don’t know what it is,’ she said.

‘But I’m really happy for it and I’m really thankful that Australia has really accepted me. 

‘I don’t really know. I would like to say my music… But I just I want to be a good song-writer and good live performer,’ she added.

Tone And I began busking in Byron Bay in September 2017. It was during her days as a street performer that she met talent manager Jackson Walkden-Brown.

She eventually hit the big time with her second single, Dance Monkey, which was released in May 2019 and topped the charts in 30 countries.
