As Ukrainians take up arms to protect their home-land, this PR professional turned army lieutenant is making sure new recruits are up to the task.

Iryna Sergeyeva became the country’s first female volunteer to receive a full military contract, having signed up to defend Ukraine in 2017.

Carrying her Kalashnikov in a car park in Kyiv, the 39-year-old said: ‘In the first days, a lot of young women came to get their hands on a rifle… without really understanding how it all works.

‘I had to nod my head while gently telling them, ”You might not be suited for this”… but this was also true with some of the guys.’
