What is coastal cowgirl? The new fashion trend is taking Gen Z by storm

A unique new fashion trend that blends the best of beachwear with equestrian-inspired cowgirl clothing has taken Gen Z fashionistas by storm – after being given the ultimate A-list seal of approval by a host of celebrities.

Coastal cowgirl, a style aesthetic that has become popularized by stars like Kendall Jenner, Pamela Anderson and more, sees women sporting cowboy boots, cowboy hats, daisy dukes and linen.

A generation obsessed with TikTok has predicted that the trend – which can be slightly modified to include an all-denim ensemble or even a linen dress – will be all the rage this summer.

And while some fashion trends come and go in a blink of an eye, New York stylist Liz Teich told DailyMail.com that this Western look was here to stay, so here’s how you can achieve the effortlessly chic aesthetic.

‘Kendall Jenner is one of the major stars all about this trend lately and makes me want to get a beachy cowgirl hat to pair with my summer dresses,’ stylist Liz Teich told DailyMail.com

The trend’s laid-back beach lifestyle and horseback-riding ranch flare has made Gen Z fall head over heels with the style, with almost every woman on TikTok flocking to stores to pick up some of their very own Western boots and cowboy hat.

At the time of writing, the hashtag #coastalcowgirl had amassed more than 7.4 billion views on the video-sharing platform.

And while TikTok has become the number-one spot to get fashion inspiration for the ‘coastal grandmother aesthetic [that is] mixed with laid back California beachy vibes with a touch of western elements,’ it was first seen on some of your favorite stars.

One model has even become the poster girl for the aesthetic, keeping every Gen Z fan in a coastal-cowgirl chokehold.

‘Kendall Jenner is one of the major stars all about this trend lately and makes me want to get a beachy cowgirl hat to pair with my summer dresses,’ Liz told DailyMail.com.

Many fashionistas are also looking towards Pamela Anderson for style tips, with the 55-year-old model and actress having perfected the look long before you saw it on your For You Page.

In the ’90s, Pamela was known for donning a pair of perfectly-washed denim cutoff shorts, a white T-shirt, and cowboy boots.

The aesthetic became one of the most desired styles after the release of the drama miniseries Daisy Jones And The Six, where the entire cast was seen strutting their stuff in the look that is similar to the coastal-grandmother style.

‘The release of Daisy Jones and The Six on Prime with 70s era Stevie Nicks-inspired looks go hand in hand with this trend,’ Liz told DailyMail.com.

GET THE LOOK: Stylist Liz Teich spills on what you need to be a coastal cowgirl

If you want to replicate the look, Liz revealed to DailyMail.com the pieces you will need, so get ready to kick that city flare to the curb:

  • Cowgirl boots (vintage, ideally)
  • Cowgirl hat (straw, ideally)
  • Denim shorts or long denim skirt
  • Silver jewelry

The trend comes after the coastal grandmother aesthetic – which mimics the clean and linen-filled style of wealthy middle-aged woman who enjoy life on their luxury beachfront property – took the fashion world by storm in the summer of 2022.

And while the style had everyone buying out every linen top in stores, according to Liz, coastal cowgirl is here for its crown.

‘This trend has taken over because coastal grandmother was trending in a big way last summer with the longing of escaping to the beach after so many of us were cooped up working from home, which followed all the “cores” like cottagecore that also longed for getting back to basics and outside,’ she told DailyMail.com.

And the reason the trend has captivated Gen Z so much? It builds the coziest and chicest outfits with pieces they already have.

‘This likely continues to trend with everyone stocking their closets with capsule classic basics. The cowgirl trend has been trending especially this year,’ the New York stylist revealed.

And if there is anything Gen Z loves more than a pair of cowboy boots, it’s searching their favorite vintage shops for a perfectly worn-in pair of shoes.

Liz explained: ‘These are easy trends straight from the runways to recreate and I think Gen Z is gravitating towards this style especially because it’s something you can shop vintage for to replicate, or better yet, they likely already have the items in their closets.’

And as festival season approaches, the popularity of the chic ranch aesthetic isn’t slowing down anytime soon.

The stylist revealed the popular music festival Coachella – which tends to see people sporting festival fashion clichés such as bohemian maxi dresses and floral headbands – will now be a hot spot for ranch chic.

‘With Coachella coming up, we’re likely to see an influx of celebs and creators bringing this aesthetic to the festival wear,’ Liz told DailyMail.com.

As well as top models and Coachella queens, Gen Z is hailing TikTok creator Paige Lorenze, founder of the brand Dairy Boy, as their new coastal-cowgirl inspiration.

The 25-year-old influencer is known for staying true to her small-town roots,  sporting her cowboy boots down the city streets any time of day.

Paige, who lives in Connecticut, told Yahoo Life that she has always had a ‘super denim-orientated style’.

‘I think people are seeing the value of good denim, good boots, and more earthy tones,’ she added.

She gushed about the Western style that has inspired a new generation to take up horseback riding, noting that it was a ‘sustainable’ fashion trend that involves ‘really good basic pieces and good boots.’
