Years & Years announce that Olly Alexander will perform SOLO

Years & Years have announced that band member Olly Alexander will now perform as a solo artist as Mikey Goldsworthy and Emre Turkmen quit the group.

The three piece shocked fans when they announced that the band will now only feature Olly, 30, and he will be releasing their new music alone.

The band, who originally formed as a five-piece in 2010, shared the news with their followers on the band’s Twitter account in a statement on Thursday.

It read: ‘Dear Y&Y fans. There’s been some changes that we want to fill you in on,’ it began. 

‘This upcoming new album has been an Olly endeavour and we’ve decided that Years & Years will continue as an Olly solo project. The three of us are still good friends. 

‘Mikey will be part of Y&Y family play with us live and Emre will focus on being a writer/producer.’ The statement concluded:

‘These past 12 months have been crazy for us all and we want to thank you for the love and support you’ve given us over the years (& years).’

The band was originally a five-piece group, with Noel Leeman and Olivier Subria, who both decided to leave the group in 2013.

The Years & Years Twitter account now reflects that it’s an ‘OIly Alexander solo project’, as the bio reads: ‘hi i’m @alexander_olly and this is my music.’

The profile picture has also been changed to an image of just Olly.

One fan wrote: ‘It’s gonna be weird at first not seeing you 3 on stage but you guys did what’s best for all! Y&Y lives on.’

Another said: ‘Omg, not really sure what to make of this?? I guess Y&Y has always kinda felt like an Olly lead band anyway?'(sic)

A third penned: ‘Omg. It’ll be so strange that you guys won’t be a three piece anymore but I’m glad Emre and Mikey will still be involve while Olly takes Y&Y on as a solo project!! All the best boys.’

The band’s first studio album, Communion, debuted at number one on the UK Album Charts in July 2015 and was the fastest-selling debut album of the year from a UK signed band.

Their biggest single to date, King, which was from their debut album reached number one in the UK Singles Charts and peaked in the top 10 across the globe.

Their second single, Shine, peaked at number two in the singles chart. 

Years & Years announced the release of their second studio album, Palo Santo, in April 2018 – which includes the top 10 single If You’re Over Me.
