Liverpool front line compared to ‘raptors’ by assistant

Liverpool had no time to revel in the fact they have reached the last eight of the Carabao Cup as their attentions immediately turned to Premier League action.

Jurgen Klopp rung out the changes for Wednesday night’s 2-0 away victory over Championship outfit Preston North End, before overseeing the return of senior stars for Thursday’s training session.

The Reds are next in action against Graham Potter ‘s in-form Brighton & Hove Albion side, who surprisingly sit fifth in the Premier League – above the likes of ‘big six’ outfits such as Manchester United, Tottenham and Arsenal.

Liverpool know a win is essential if they are to continue to breathe down the necks of title rivals Chelsea – who they could leapfrog depending on the Blues result away at Newcastle.

Here are five things Mirror Sport spotted from Liverpool’s Thursday training session.

Loris Karius makes rare appearance

The German shot-stopper has actually been around the Liverpool training ground since the summer, but is rarely spotted in full training exercises.

Karius has not featured for the Reds in the Premier League since the 2017/18 season, but remains on the books after numerous loan stints away.

He is currently regarded as the fourth choice shot-stopper at the club, behind Alisson Becker, Caoimhin Kelleher and Adrián respectively and thus his exposure is limited – even in training drills.

His last competitive Liverpool appearance in any capacity came in the infamous 3-1 Champions League final defeat to Real Madrid, and the less said about that the better.

Keita’s injury fears eased

The sight of Naby Keita being stretchered out of action at Old Trafford was the lone blemish on what was an otherwise perfect display against Man Utd.

The midfielder was pivotal in all things positive for the Reds at the home of their fierce rivals, scoring the first of Liverpool’s five goals on Sunday.

However, mid-way through the second half Keita was caught high by a late challenge from Paul Pogba – who was subsequently sent off for the tackle after a VAR check.

The challenge ended Keita’s afternoon, but Reds fans will be delighted to see the Guinean back in training and ready for Saturday’s contest.

Thiago recovering well

Thiago’s presence in training will be a welcome sight for all associated with the club given the Spaniard’s mercurial midfield talent.

The former Bayern Munich man has been side-lined since mid-September with a calf injury sustained against Crystal Palace.

However, Liverpool fans may have to reserve their excitement over his return a little while longer.

Reds assistant boss Pep Lijnders revealed the Brighton game appears to have come too soon for Thiago, explaining: “Thiago – Brighton will be close, but probably not. He’s almost back.”

Robertson’s passion on display

Few Liverpool players wear the hearts on their sleeve quite like Andy Robertson.

The Scotsman’s fierce passion and will to win was evident even during a training game, as he was pictured protesting a decision made by first-team fitness coach Dr. Conall Murtagh.

Robertson is not one to take losing well and is often seen remonstrating with officials if he feels a decision has gone against his side.

It is now evident he carries that same attitude and desire into training every day.

Salah among the goals again

The man of the moment looked right at home with a ball at his feet next to some training goals as he continues to leave everyone stunned at his recent form.

The Egypt international is the Premier League’s top scorer and arguably the best player on the planet, his hat-trick against United the latest stunning feat from a player capable of magic.

Having enjoyed a well-earned rest while his teammates progressed past Preston, Salah will be called into action once again on Saturday as Liverpool continue their title tilt.

On 10 league goals so far this term, Brighton’s back-line will have to be on high alert to try and nullify Salah’s threat.
