6 Man City stars who face axe as Guardiola aims to strengthen squad this summer

With Manchester City set to clinch a third Premier League title in four years by some distance, there is little that would appear to be wrong with Pep Guardiola’s squad.

But the City boss will look to keep his squad evolving this summer, to stay ahead of the chasing pack domestically and ensure the Blues remain a force in Europe.

The likes of Erling Haaland, Jadon Sancho and Harry Kane have all been mentioned with a move to the Etihad but with Sergio Aguero’s departure confirmed after a record-breaking decade of service, who else could Guardiola look to jettison this summer as he looks to regenerate his squad?

Here are six players Guardiola could offload this summer…

Fernandinho

Club captain Fernandinho has been a key man for Man City for eight seasons, but is out of contract this summer and could leave.

Pep Guardiola has gone out of his way to praise the club captain for his contribution off the field, as his appearances on it have started to dwindle, with Rodri now City’s first-choice holing midfielder.

But Fernandinho is out of contract this summer and yet to agree an extension, which could signal the end of his successful eight-year spell at the club.

Eric Garcia

Garcia appears destined to return to the club he started his career at
Eric Garcia is another who is out of contract at Man City this summer and is set to return to Barcelona, after refusing to sign a new deal.

Having rejected City’s offer of a new contract, Garcia is destined to leave as a free agent this summer, with boyhood club Barcelona his destination.

Barca made a bid of around £9million for Garcia before deadline day last summer, which City – who valued him at £20m – rejected. Now he is free to leave for nothing at the end of this season.

Benjamin Mendy

Benjamin Mendy has failed to live up to his £52m fee since joining Man City in 2017 and is likely to be sold this summer.

Arguably the biggest disappointment of Guardiola’s reign, Mendy arrived at City from Monaco for £52m in 2017 with a reputation as one of Europe’s most formidable left-backs, but injuries, ill-discipline and poor form have seen him fall well short of expectations.

City are likely to listen to offers for Mendy this summer, but will have to take a big hit on what they paid for him.

Jack Harrison

Jack Harrison, who has spent three seasons on loan at Leeds from Man City, is likely to make the move permanent this summer.

Now into his third season on loan at Leeds, where he has thrived and become a key member of the team under Marcelo Bielsa, midfielder Harrison is expected to make his move from City permanent this summer.

Leeds are likely to have to pay in the region of £10m to make him their player, but it is understood the framework of a deal is already in place.

Aro Muric

Aro Muric is another who is likely to leave City this summer, with Zac Steffen now established as second-choice to Ederson.

With Zac Steffen now Ederson’s official understudy, Muric, who is currently on loan at Dutch club Willem II and also had a spell at Nottingham Forest, is likely to seek a permanent move elsewhere this summer, with no realistic route to City’s first-team available to him.

Patrick Roberts

Currently at Derby, in his seventh loan spell away from City, this could be the year when winger Roberts – who joined from Fulham at 17-years-old for a fee of £12m in 2015 – finally makes a permanent move away from the Blues.
