Seemingly out of nowhere, Manchester United suddenly appear to be genuine title challengers following a superb run of form.
Belief seems to be growing at Old Trafford that a first title since the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson could be on the cards.
But in order to make that happen they may well need to strengthen in January and add further depth to the squad.
Here are six players who United are rumoured to be targeting in the coming month as they look to build a team capable of pushing Liverpool all the way…
Max Aarons (Norwich)
It came as something of a surprise that right-back Max Aarons did not leave Norwich in the summer.
The 20-year-old was arguably the Canaries’ most impressive player last season despite their relegation, yet despite being linked with a number of big clubs in the previous window they managed to keep hold of him.
But United look set to test their resolve again in January and are reportedly lining up a £20m bid for the England U-21 international.
Aarons would provide competition for Aaron Wan-Bissaka, and could prove to be a shrewd signing if it comes off.
Renato Sanches (Lille)
Remember Renato Sanches?
The 23-year-old Portuguese midfielder was considered one of the brightest young talents in Europe at one stage, but never quite reached his full potential at Bayern Munich or in a surprise loan spell at Swansea.
Now, however, he is rediscovering his best form at French side Lille, and he is said to be drawing attention from a number of elite clubs.
There are suggestions United could battle Liverpool for his signature, and it remains to be seen if either side make a bid in the coming weeks or, indeed, if Lille will be willing to let him go.
Kieran Trippier (Atletico Madrid)
Ex-Tottenham right-back Kieran Trippier has impressed since making a move to Atletico Madrid last summer.
And if United fail to land Aarons there is speculation they may turn their attentions to the England international, who could be tempted with a Premier League return.
One stumbling block is a recent worldwide 10 week ban Trippier has received from the FA for breaching betting regulations, however, and if he does sign he would not be able to play until March.
For this reason, United may well wait until the summer before swooping for the Bury-born defender.
Dayot Upamecano (RB Leipzig)
As well as the full-back positions, United are also keen to strengthen in the centre of defence.
And one man they have had their eye on for some time is RB Leipzig star Dayot Upamecano.
Solskjaer couldn’t hide his admiration for the player ahead of his side’s game against the Bundesliga outfit in the Champions League earlier this season, admitting he was looking forward to seeing the Frenchman “up close”.
Upamecano recently signed a new deal at Leipzig, however, meaning he is unlikely to come cheap.
Nevertheless, such is his quality that it would be a signing that would surely be worth every penny.
Moises Caicedo (Independiente de Valle)
You may not have heard of Moises Caicedo yet, but the 19-year-old looks set to become one of the stars of the future.
The central midfielder has already won four caps for Ecuador, and has been turning heads with his superb performances for club side Independiente del Valle.
This has led to talk of some of the European big boys eyeing his signature, and Caicedo himself has confessed United is his “dream club”.
Chelsea are the other Premier League side thought to be monitoring his progress, and we could be in for a transfer tug-of-war this month.
Leon Bailey (Bayer Leverkusen)
Another player who has been perennially linked with a move to England, could this be the window where Leon Bailey finally gets a transfer?
The Bayer Leverkusen forward has once again shone in the Bundesliga so far this season, scoring nine goals and creating seven assists in all competitions.
He has recently joined English agency USM, in a move which could boost his chances of a Premier League switch.
