Asked if he expects to be fighting it out with the German this season, he responded “Yeah, competition. Competition is key.

“It’s a fantastic place to be, Bernd has done a fantastic job over recent seasons and it’s my job to push him all the way and take his shirt.

Will Aaron Ramsdale be Arsenal’s no.1 keeper this season ahead of Bernd Leno? Comment below

“That’s for me to achieve and for him to keep in front of me. Healthy competition is going to be good for the group and hopefully, I can bring something different to the goalkeeping department, as well as the team.

“We all have different qualities so hopefully we can merge into one as a team.”

Ramsdale reckons he is an “old head” on young shoulders given his wealth of Premier League experience under his belt at Sheffield United and Bournemouth.

He said: “I’ve learned to grow mentally and as a person off the pitch. I think I have an old head for a young 23-year-old and some people say goalkeepers don’t play a lot of football by the time they’re 23, but obviously, I have so that’s on my side.

“I’ve learned how to play different ways. Long ball, out from the back and mixing it up so there are bows to my rack that I’m adding to each time and hopefully I can continue to do that here.”

Asked what his strengths are, Ramsdale added: “I wear my heart on my sleeve, I leave everything out there. It’s a classic way of looking at it, but I have a lot of passion and pride.

“The way I play is that I can play it long, very comfortable playing short and can mix it up playing passes into midfield, and hopefully that’s something I can add to the team.

“I am not afraid for it to go long if it needs to. I have a little bit of every league in me and am more than happy to have a rough and tumble in the box for crosses.

“I’ll give my all with a lot of hard work. It’s not all going to be plain sailing and going in a positive direction every time, but you won’t see me shying away from any challenges and if it’s bad, I’ll still be standing up and going again next time.”
