Transfer deadline day: Premier League round-up

Adrien Rabiot has moved to quash any long-standing animosity stemming from France’s shock exit at Euro 2020.

Les Bleus were favourites to add the European Championship crown to the World Cup they won in 2018.

But they crashed out in the last-16 to Switzerland, throwing away a two-goal lead to eventually lose out on penalties.

And while Didier Deschamps’ side were crumbling on the pitch, tensions allegedly boiled over in the stands between the players’ families.

Footage circulated on social media showed Rabiot’s mother apparently in a heated confrontation with Kylian Mbappe’s father.

Reports in the French press claimed Veronique labelled the Paris Saint-Germain forward – who missed the deciding penalty – “arrogant” and was telling his father to speak to him.

She also allegedly took aim at the family of Paul Pogba, after his mistake allowed the Swiss to get back in the game with a second goal.

But after joining back up with his international colleagues, Rabiot has stated that, according to his mother at least, the incident was blown out of proportion.

“Nothing at all happened in the stands. It was a bit surprising to hear all of that. I spoke with her and I believe her,” Rabiot told Telefoot via GFFN.

“When she tells me that nothing happened, that’s the truth. You could see some irritation on the video, that can always happen, but who knows what was said?

“I haven’t spoken about it with Mbappé or Pogba, there was nothing on their side nor on my own so there was no need to speak about any of it.”

Pogba and Rabiot reportedly had an exchange of words in the dressing room following the penalty defeat by Switzerland and the Manchester United star has spoken of his frustration with their loss.

“It really hurt us. When we look back on that game, nobody could have imagined all that,” he told Telefoot. “It wasn’t Switzerland who won the match, it was us who lost it.”

France’s follow-up to their disappointing summer hasn’t gone well however. In two World Cup qualifiers this week Deschamps’ men have been held 1-1 on both occasions.

The draws with Ukraine and Bosnia and Herzegovina leaves them at the top of Group D, four points clear of Finland having played two games more.
