Aguero tests positive for Covid-19 days after joining Barcelona from Man City

Former Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero has tested positive for Covid-19 – just days after signing for Barcelona.

He is said to have tested positive in a rapid test carried out at the Argentinian Football Association’s installations in Ezeiza on the outskirts of Buenos Aires soon after his arrival on Tuesday morning from Europe.

Aguero is now understood to be awaiting the results of a second PCR test.

The 33-year-old had to quarantine at his home near Manchester with girlfriend Sofia Calzetti after they tested positive for coronavirus in February.

A second PCR test came back negative, according to Aguero’s father, Leonel del Castillo, who said on radio La Red: “First he was positive and when they tested him again it came back negative.”

The scare came on Aguero’s 33rd birthday on Tuesday.

His partner Sofia Calzetti made no mention of his positive test but posted a picture of them with the message: “Happy birthday my love. Let’s keep growing, evolving and walking together hand in hand. I love you.”

The second result is now expect to clear him to take part in Argentina’s upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Chile and Colombia.

Argentina face Chile on Friday before travelling to Barranquilla to face Colombia on Wednesday.
The fixtures will also serve as preparation for Argentina’s challenge for the Copa America this summer.
It is not the ideal start to Aguero’s time at Barcelona, but he finally gets the chance to link up with Lionel Messi at club level as well as for his country, providing the six-time Ballon d’Or winner stays at the Nou Camp, of course.

“I talk to Leo every day and he sent me a congratulatory message. Now that I will have him every day it will be much easier,” Aguero told a press conference.

“What happens with Leo will be the decision of the club but it is a pleasure and a pride to play with Leo. If he continues, which I think he will, I will try to give everything as he has always done.”

Meanwhile, Messi feels Argentina can have a successful summer ahead after being buoyed by meeting up with his international teammates again.

Asked how he feels ahead of the tournament, Messi said: “Excited with a lot of desire to do things well. In the last Copa América, we left a good image, but we cannot stay with that, and we want to continue growing.

“In the last qualifying games, we also did well, but it was a long time since that, and we weren’t able to get back together, but we want to get back together as soon as possible.”

He added: “We always want to win; that’s the goal. The youngsters are very eager, the greats also with the same or more. Something very nice was generated.

“There is a very united group that works together with the stage that [coach Lionel] Scaloni started. We are making a group very good, and that is the important thing, to create a strong group.”
