Alberto Moreno sends message to Liverpool fans after beating Man Utd

The former Liverpool left-back came on as a substitute in the second period as the Spanish side beat United in the final in Gdansk after a mammoth penalty shootout

Former Liverpool left-back Alberto Moreno sent a joyous message to Liverpool fans after he got the better of Manchester United in the Europa League final.

The Spanish international was a second half substitute in the final in Gdansk, and scored from the penalty spot in the mammoth shootout that followed the 1-1 draw.

After Gerard Moreno and Edinson Cavani swapped goals in normal time, 22 penalties were taken in a shootout that stood at 11-10 to Villarreal when United goalkeeper David de Gea saw his kick saved by opposite number Geronimo Rulli.

That spark joyous celebrations among the Spanish side, with Moreno taking to his Instagram story to celebrate after the victory.

On one section of the video Moreno, who played 141 times for Liverpool between 2014 and 2019, winning the Champions League two years ago, shouts “You’ll Never Walk Alone” down the camera in a message well received by Reds supporters.

Former Liverpool midfielder Lucas Leiva also tweeted a message to Moreno, saying “congratulations little brother.”

United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was devastated with the defeat.

“We didn’t turn up and didn’t play as well as we know we can do,” he said.

On the dressing room, he added: “It’s quiet of course, a disappointed dressing room. that’s football for you, sometimes it’s decided on one kick and that’s the difference between winning and losing.

“We have to taste this feeling and make sure we don’t get it again.

“Now is not the time to point the finger on what I would have done differently but when you come out without a trophy then you haven’t done everything right.

“When you turn up with no trophy, you’re not doing everything right. We were one kick away from a trophy.

“We need to get better, we’ve done really well, coming through a difficult start and got closer to the top and hit to a final but you need to win these finals to make it a successful season

“We’ve built a strong squad, competitive squad, they’re gutted in there.”

Former United defender Rio Ferdinand, working for BT Sport, added: “United have relied on individuals throughout the season to come up with the trump cards, in critical moments in the games.

“Bruno has been the man they’ve leaned on, Cavani, Mason Greenwood sometimes, Marcus Rashford, but today they never came up with the goods.

“In the final third, they didn’t take enough chances, they didn’t risk enough, the imagination wasn’t there.

“It’s not been too many occasions where you can say that one of them hasn’t stepped up and produced.

“They had a spell after Cavani scored and you thought they had the momentum and were going to go on and take the game by the scruff of the neck, but they didn’t.”
