Alex Scott confirmed as the new host of Football Focus

he BBC have confirmed Alex Scott will be the new host of Football Focus.

Former Arsenal and England player Scott will replace Dan Walker, who will step down from the Saturday afternoon show at the end of the season.

Scott has excelled as a pundit since retiring in 2018 following three spells with Arsenal, earning 140 caps for England and representing Great Britain at London 2012.

The 36-year-old, who has previously co-hosted The One Show and the BBC’s Children In Need, will become the first permanent female host of Football Focus in its 47-year history.

Scott said: “When I was a kid, I would never have watched television and thought someone like me could be presenting a programme like Football Focus. For the BBC to trust me with this role and allow me to be my true, authentic self means a lot.

“To say I’m the Football Focus presenter feels surreal. I’ve had some amazing messages and an incredible reaction on social media – I want to thank everyone for their support.

“I was one of the first female pundits on the BBC and I clearly remember being determined to transcend from being labelled a ‘female pundit’ to ‘pundit’.

“Besides the statements surrounding my gender or my race, after being part of the BBC family for six years, I want people to see me on TV and think ‘she’s great at what she does’.

“The first show in August will be exciting and I’m looking forward to it. Of course it’s going to be different but I hope you embrace it and stay with us.

“I promise you I will bring the best of myself to Football Focus and I hope you enjoy the ride. Today it is all starting to feel real, and I am ready.”
