Allardyce names Chelsea’s surprising weak link targeted by West Brom

Sam Allardyce has named Chelsea’s weak link who his West Brom side targeted on Saturday.

The Baggies inflicted a first defeat in Thomas Tuchel since his arrival in the Premier League back in January.

And they did so in some fashion, smashing the Blues 5-2 at Stamford Bridge with two goals each from Mattheus Pereira and Callum Robinson.

Despite going a goal up through Christian Pulisic, a red card to Thiago Silva completely turned the game in its head.

Chelsea could not cope and were tore apart by West Brom with almost every attack, with Tuchel looking on stunned on the touchline.

And Allardyce has named Edouard Mendy as the weak link in the Blues side, insisting the former Rennes star was “rash”.

It is an odd man to pick out, considering Tuchel’s men had kept 12 clean sheets in 14 appearances prior to the weekend.

Speaking to talkSPORT, Allardyce said: “Letting them play out from the back for the goalkeeper would be a mistake.

“That may have been a tactic we used later in the game but if it works try and keep doing it for as long as possible.

“That’s why we played two split up front with Mateus Pereira and Mbaye Diagne.

“The press worked very, very well and there is something with their goalkeeper, who can be rash, he can rush out.

“If you saw the first goal we scored, he came dashing to the edge of his box and didn’t get anywhere near.

“We felt every time we went back to the goal and we put him under pressure that gave us good opportunities.

“Obviously you could say the sending off helped, playing against ten men, but you’ve got to beat what’s still a very good side.”
