Anthony Joshua has had a meteoric rise from Watford council estate to £100m boxer.
Having only started boxing at the age of 18, Joshua earned a place on the GB Boxing team within three years and won heavyweight gold at the London 2012 Olympics.
Since then the belts haven’t stopped coming, but the boxer has remained humble despite all his immense success and vast wealth.
Rather than splash out his fortune on himself, Joshua prefers to spend money on his loved ones.
He has shelled out for lavish homes, all expenses paid luxury trips and the best wheels money can buy for those who have helped him get to the top.
Here is a look at Joshua’s life outside the ring and his relationships with his nearest and dearest.
Touching relationship with mum
When his parents divorced, Watford-born Joshua returned to England with his mother Yeta after a year in Jamaica.
The boxer’s inspiring mum is a huge inspiration to him and they share an incredibly close bond.
But she has only ever been to a couple of his fights because she finds it difficult watching her son being punched repeatedly in the ring.
In 2013, he bought an ex-council home for his mother for £175,000 in North London.
Despite amassing a mass fortune through boxing, Joshua continued to live with his mum in her humble two-bed house in Golders Green.
The boxer rented a £20,000 a week mansion to prepare for his big fight with Wladimir Klitschko, but reportedly moved back in with his mum after the match in 2017.
Joshua then moved into his own pad just minutes down the road, but mother and son have been living together in lockdown.
He even invited his niece and cousin to move in so they could all be together in these strange times.
“We are all aware there is a pandemic happening across the world but fortunately none of my family have had any tragic losses or massive effects from the virus,” said Joshua.
“We are trying to take advantage of spending time together.”
As well as his boxing career, Joshua spends his time being a hands-on dad to four-year-old son Joseph ‘JJ’ Joshua.
After he split from JJ’s mum, ex-girlfriend Nicole Osbourne, he made sure they were both well looked after and bought her a £500,000 penthouse in North London.
Despite being one of the most famous men on the planet, he is simply ‘dad’ to his young son.
“At home he doesn’t really think of me as a famous boxer or anything like that. I’m not a superstar and he doesn’t think so either. He knows I fight but that’s all,” he told The Sun.
“I always keep that stuff away from home. I’m not like that at home – and I’m not even like that when I go out, really.”
It may come somewhat as a surprise that Joshua does not want JJ to follow in his footsteps.
“No it’s too hard. It’s a dangerous sport. I want my son to be the best man that he can be, but I don’t want him to be compared to me,” the boxer said.
“You’re not going to be a boxing star without going through heaps of pain.
“Life is not a highlight reel. A career is not a highlight reel. People see the glamour, the winning.
“Nobody’s interested in the knocks and bruises, the bad eye, the struggle. My son has the bloodline for it, there’s no doubt about that.”
One of the most special things for the fighter is spending quality time with his in lockdown.
Although he admitted he has been facing the same struggles as millions of other parents across the UK when it comes to home schooling.
“I started off as super-dad and then that slowly went out the window and to be honest he’s watching way too much TV now,” he explained.
“The only thing he wants to do is watch Paw Patrol and Ryan’s World – there’s no way you’d get him watching Joe Wicks.”
Joshua likes to support those people who have helped him through the good times and the bad.
He treats members of his entourage to luxury holidays on private jets and new sports cars.
Freddie Cunningham, his close friend and marketing manager, has explained that the boxer doesn’t live as luxurious a life as he could.
“From the outside, it probably looks like he does. He’s seen in private jets, wearing expensive watches, and driving around in nice cars,” he told Business Insider.
“But the jets are all sponsored. We’ve never paid for a private jet, or a helicopter, in our life. He gets a signature car from Land Rover.
“He’s not spending that money. He’s accumulating money. He’s living a lifestyle that probably everyone wants him to live, or see him live, but he’s doing it in a smart way. Tactful.”
Being a superstar boxer does have some downsides, as Joshua struggles to find time to meet the love of his life.
The boxer doesn’t currently have a girlfriend and it doesn’t look like he will anytime soon.
With much of his time taken up by training hard to defend his titles, there is not a lot of space in his diary for finding love.
“I think you can date and still be a successful sportsman but it’s hard to find a balance and I would have to compromise — which I’ve not felt able to do,” he told The Sun.
“My dad never gave me advice about much. But in terms of relationships what I have learnt and what I tell my son is, it would be nice to find a high school sweetheart and to grow together because as you get older you get set in your ways.”
Joshua doesn’t want a romance to get in the way of his incredible career, so is putting love on the back burner for now.
He explained: “For me to have a relationship now means I would have to compromise and change my ways and I don’t know how easy that would be for me to do.
“So I do date but I don’t get to the stage where I actually put anyone into that position.”
However, the boxer does want to settle down with someone one day once his career inside the ring has come to an end.
“I don’t have a girlfriend and I haven’t had one for a while,” he added.
“But as I get older I do think it would be nice to have someone, someone to grow with as well — but I honestly haven’t found anyone.”
