Arsenal confirmed Pierre-Emerick Aubaemyang had been stripped of the captaincy with manager Mikel Arteta subsequently confirming the striker will be unavailable for selection
Barcelona are set to offer Arsenal outcast Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang a timely escape route and could send one of their top talents the other way.
Aubameyang’s future at the Gunners is uncertain to say the least after it was confirmed he had been stripped of the captaincy.
The news comes days after the 32-year-old was dropped from the matchday squad for what manager Mikel Arteta described as a disciplinary breach.
It’s the second such breach in a matter of months, with Arteta now taking action against the club’s highest earner.
“I think it’s a really clear statement from the club,” Arteta said on Tuesday. “It’s a decision we have made following the last incident that we had with the players and this is where we stand.”
Arteta then refused to rule out the possibility that Aubameyang could be sold next month when the January window opens.
Asked about a potential exit: “I can say right now that we have made this decision, unfortunately it’s a really tough one and obviously if I had to choose I would not like to be sitting here talking about it but we had to do it. But for now, he is not involved in the squad.”
The Arsenal boss confirmed the striker wouldn’t be available for selection in the upcoming weeks, admitting he was “hurting” following the axe.
Barcelona have reportedly made their interest known, amid a desperate search for a new man to lead the line.
Sergio Aguero was signed by the Blaugrana during the summer, but has struggled with a worrying heart condition and speculation has suggested he could announce his retirement in a hastily arranged press conference later this week.

Barca’s financial woes are well documented and would need to be creative to land him and according to the Independent, Ousmane Dembele could be used as a potential makeweight.
Dembele is currently on a contract worth £200,000-per-week and they would be open to shifting that kind of salary in order to bring in Aubameyang.
Should the French forward make the move to north London it would see the Gunners finally end a four-year pursuit.
In 2017, Arsene Wenger attempted to sign Dembele from Borussia Dortmund, launching a bid before he joined Barcelona.
Dembele has enjoyed a difficult four years at the Camp Nou, never able to string together consistent performances thanks to a lengthy list of injury woes.
He has made just six appearances in all competitions this season and is set to become a free agent at the end of the current campaign.
