Rodgers gives update on Maddison amid Arsenal links

Arsenal are exploring a shock move for Manchester City midfielder Bernardo Silva as boss Mikel Arteta looks to add more creativity to his side.

Silva is one of the players whose future at the Etihad is in doubt following Jack Grealish’s £100million arrival.

And boss Pep Guardiola admitted on Friday that he was open to the Portuguese and two three others leaving if the right offers came in for them.

Bernardo had been keen on a move to Spain, with Atletico Madrid and Barcelona both looking at signing him this summer.

But the financial situations at the La Liga clubs means they could struggle to afford him and that has opened the door to Arsenal.

Arteta knows Bernardo well after working with him at City during his days as Guardiola’s No.2.

And he has made a playmaker one of his top priorities during this window after Martin Odegaard’s loan spell from Real Madrid ended.

James Maddison is also in Arteta’s sights but Leicester, who value their player at £60million, are playing hardball and a deal for Bernardo could be easier to get over the line.

Foxes boss Brendan Rodgers declared earlier this week that nothing had crossed his desk regarding a transfer for Maddison.

“He’s a busy young guy now, he’s become a father, so he’s changing nappies and everything else,” said Rodgers. “James doesn’t change. He’s a wonderful young guy to work with.

“It is what it is, it’s gossip and speculation, so you can’t get too emotional with all of that.

“He’ll understand it’s the nature of this time of the season, with lots of stories going around. I know he’s very happy here and wants to be here.

“I haven’t spoken to him on it. I don’t need to speak around gossip and speculation. If anything ever comes to the club, Jon Rudkin will tell me straight away and I will deal with it then.

“There’s been nothing that’s come my way. As far as I’m concerned, we haven’t had anything for James.

“He’s a very talented player but also in the bigger picture, you’ve seen it, all clubs lose players but for us it’s not something we worry about.

“We’re a club that develops players and develops staff. Whenever those players and people develop, they’re always held in high regard.”
