Arteta gives update on Nketiah’s contract negotiations with Arsenal

Arsenal’s recent resurgence may suggest that Mikel Arteta is content with his squad, but there is still business to be done as the winter transfer window edges closer.

The Gunners were the Premier League’s biggest spenders in the summer transfer window and, with the market set to reopen on January 1, may be tempted into bringing in more recruits.

Mikel Arteta’s summer overhaul saw six new signings arrive at the Emirates Stadium at a cost of £150million, with the likes of Aaron Ramsdale, Ben White and Takehiro Tomiyasu already first-team regulars.

But the Gunners appear to be far from finished in their efforts to strengthen their squad, and sporting director Edu Gaspar will be busy discussing deals both in and out of the club.

Mikel Arteta is reaping the benefits from his summer hire after Arsenal beat Leicester to go nine games unbeaten

After their poor start to the season, Arsenal are now back on track to challenge for the European spots after missing out last season with their second successive eighth-placed finish.

That could see Arteta handed more funds to ensure the north London side are able to book their place in continental competition next season by securing a place in the top six.

Mirror Football has rounded up the latest transfer news from the Emirates.

Gunners face battle for Asensio

Real Madrid’s Marco Asensio is reportedly a target for Arsenal

Liverpool and Arsenal are battling it out to sign Real Madrid midfielder Marcos Asensio, according to reports in Spain.

The 25-year-old has done well to recover from two serious knee injuries early in his career and looks to be back to full fitness after featuring for Los Blancos this season.

But the Spain international is no longer a regular feature of the first-team setup under Carlo Ancelotti and could seek an exit in January after making just three starts this season.

El Nacional claim that both Arsenal and Liverpool are keen on the Spaniard but could face competition from Borussia Dortmund.

Arteta may find it difficult to convince Asensio he will play regularly after signing Odegaard in the summer, as well as having Bukayo Saka, Emile Smith Rowe and Nicolas Pepe available.

Liverpool, meanwhile, are searching for midfield recruits after losing four first-team members to injury, with Jurgen Klopp on the brink of another selection crisis.

Real may prefer a permanent sale as opposed to a loan, however, as they are expected to double down on their efforts to sign PSG star Kylian Mbappe.

Arsenal target Vlahovic ‘favours Juventus move’

Dusan Vlahovic has been linked with Arsenal but is understood to favour a move to Juventus

Arteta’s plans to sign a striker to replace Alexandre Lacazette have hit a snag after it emerged that Fiorentina frontman Dusan Vlahovic would prefer to join Juventus.

The Bianconeri have endured a torrid start to the season and find themselves down in 10th in Serie A.

Massimiliano Allegri’s side are searching for more firepower after Cristiano Ronaldo‘s exit and Alvaro Morata and Paulo Dybala’s struggles in front of goal.

The Italian giants need to free up space in their wage budget space in order to make another transfer, according to Tuttosport, with Aaron Ramsey likely to be sold in January to make space in their squad.

The Welshman has failed to live up to expectations with the Italian giants and could be set to head back to England with Newcastle.

Should they seal a deal for the former Gunner, Juve would then be free to discuss a deal for Vlahovic, whose contract expires in 2023 and has refused to sign a new deal with the Viola.

The 21-year-old, who has scored eight goals this season, is interested in a move to Turin and would favour joining Juve over Arsenal and Tottenham, who were strongly linked in the summer.

Brazilian starlet reveals England dream

Yuri Alberto has scored 21 goals since joining Internacional in 2020

Internacional striker Yuri Alberto has admitted he dreams of playing in Europe after being linked with Arsenal and Everton.

The 20-year-old has reportedly been on the radar of scouts from the north London club since emerging on the scene with Brazil at the South American Under-17 Championship.

The young forward has caught the eye since joining the club from Santos in 2020, scoring 21 goals in 47 appearances and hitting three hat-tricks in 2021 alone.

Alberto claimed he was unaware of any interest from Manchester City, while Arsenal and Everton are monitoring his situation.

While the youngster says he is currently content with life in his native country, he would be tempted by a move to Europe in the future.

“Every player dreams of one day playing in Europe, in a big league,” he told Brazilian outlet Globo Esporte.

“I’m very happy at Inter. I love this club, the way the fans welcomed me.

“Everything has been wonderful but I do dream of going to Europe.”
