Arsenal’s frustrating start to the new year continued on Sunday.

After going out of the Carabao Cup against Liverpool on Thursday, they were held to a 0-0 draw by the Premier League’s bottom club Burnley three days later.

The Gunners have looked like contenders for the top four for long spells of the campaign and while they remain well in the hunt, the 0-0 draw with the Clarets represents a significant setback on a weekend where a number of rivals dropped points.

The club now has a fortnight to stew on the result and potentially address some of the weaknesses in the squad in the transfer market.

Arsenal reach 32-year low

The 0-0 draw against Burnley continued a worrying recent trend for Arsenal.

Not only was it their fourth game in succession without a win, it was the fourth in a row without scoring. Having played with such attacking endeavour and incision throughout December, the recent regression of the forward line will be a major worry for Arteta.

As noted by Mike Walters in his post-game report, it is also the first time in 32 years that Arsenal have been out of all cup competitions – both domestically and in Europe – before the end of January.

“For all their promise on a blank sabbath, they were as blunt as the back end of a bus,” he added.

Suarez role in Vlahovic transfer

Dusan Vlahovic has been the name in the frame for the majority of the transfer window for Arsenal fans, although it’s a deal that appears increasingly unlikely to come off.

Fresh reports indicate Juventus may make a move for the Serbian and a potential recommendation from former Liverpool striker Luis Suarez may pave the way for that deal to go ahead.

Suarez is said to be encouraging Juventus midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur to join former team-mate Steven Gerrard at Aston Villa. Should the Uruguayan make that switch, then it could free up funds for the Bianconeri to pursue the Fiorentina sensation.

Vlahovic is one of European football’s hottest prospects, having netted 17 goals in Serie A already this term.

Pepe offers Aubameyang insight

After being stripped of the club captaincy last month, it’s been accepted that there is a good chance Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang leaves Arsenal before the January window closes.

However, current Arsenal winger Nicolas Pepe has said he thinks the Gabon international may remain an at the Emirates Stadium.

A clip released on social media showed an Arsenal supporter asking Pepe whether he believed Aubameyang would be sold this month.

“I don’t know,” was the response from the Ivory Coast international. “I think he’ll stay, but I don’t know.”
