Arsenal are reportedly up against three of Europe’s heavyweights in the race to sign Red Bull Salzburg’s rising star Dominik Szoboszlai.
Szoboszlai has been on the radar of the contintent’s biggest clubs for some time, with Real Madrid and AC Milan believed to be keen on the midfielder, as well as Mikel Arteta’s Gunners.
And now Bayern Munich could join the scramble to sign Szoboszlai, with club legend Lothar Matthaus having compared the 20-year-old to Chelsea playmaker Kai Havertz.
Szoboszlai’s stock has risen further following his stunning solo stoppage-tie winner against Iceland which sent Hungary to next summer’s European Championship finals.
The midfielder has already laid on six goals in the Austrian Bundesliga this season, also scoring one himself, and has notched further assists in the Champions League.
Last season he scored 12 goals and posted 18 assists in all competitions for Salzburg.
And Arsenal will have to move fast if they want to sign him in the January window – especially after Matthaus suggested that Bayern will be after him.
Matthaus was asked which players are most important to Hungary, who will be in Germany’s group for next summer’s postponed Euro 2020 finals.
He told Abendzeitung Muenchen : “There is Dominik Szoboszlai, who scored the decisive goal against Iceland. He’s a gem, a guy like Kai Havertz.
“In Hungary he is already being compared to the great Ferenc Puskas.
“A really great player who sometimes acts in the center and sometimes comes over the flank.
“He could move to RB Leipzig in January , but I’m convinced that every top European club has him on the list, including FC Bayern.”
Arsenal have been credited with an interest in Szoboszlai as Arteta seeks more creativity in midfield, having missed out on Lyon attacker Houssem Aouar during the summer.
Szoboszlai is likely to be in action again for his country when they face Turkey in the Nations League on Wednesday.
