Arsenal ready to cut short Torreira loan transfer amid Atletico Madrid issues

Arsenal are reportedly ready to cut short Lucas Torreira’s loan transfer with Atletico Madrid and send him elsewhere instead.

The Uruguay international left the Gunners for Atletico in the summer transfer window, but he has barely featured under Diego Simeone.

Torreira has made just six appearance for Atletico Madrid this season, and has played only 19 minutes in the La Liga side’s past five games.

A number of clubs have been keeping track of the midfielder’s lack of progress in Spain and are keen to take Torreira off Atletico Madrid’s hands.

Serie A clubs Fiorentina and Torino are both interested in Torreira, with the former working to reach an agreement with Arsenal for a permanent purchase, reports La Nazione.

Arsenal are reportedly open to the idea, so could cut short the Uruguayan’s deal with Atletico to make the transfer happen.

Whether Arsenal would agree to a permanent sale remains to be seen, although the club did attempt to include an option-to-buy clause in his loan deal with Atletico.

Gunners technical director Edu explained Arsenal’s decision to part company with Torreira following the summer transfer window.

Both Matteo Guendouzi and Torreira fell out of favour at Arsenal

He said: “The market situation was really strange. It was difficult to manage well because nobody was 100 per cent comfortable to do the deals. Even loan players or to swap players was even more difficult. I think we did it quite well.

“If you see Lucas Torreira, if you see Matteo [Guendouzi] I think for them it was really important to move, play more games, be more comfortable and happier because both came to me and Mikel to talk about the possibility to go to have more game and play more minutes.

“When you see the clubs they went to it was brilliant. Lucas went to Atletico Madrid which is a very important club going to play Champions League.

Mikel Arteta isn’t a fan of the Uruguay international

“They play quite a nice system, the way they are playing for Lucas Torreira then you see Hertha Berlin and it’s a similar situation with Lucas.

“To play more games, develop his career and of course we are going to be following them because they are still Arsenal players and this is important to mention.”
