Arteta apologises to Arsenal fans after defeat at Brentford

Arsenal have reportedly handed a deadline for boss Mikel Arteta with a list of objectives to turnaround the club’s fortunes.

Arteta is under pressure in his role at the Gunners after his side crashed to a limp two-goal defeat at newly promoted Brentford on Friday night in the Premier League.

It follows on from Arteta’s first full season in the hotseat, which saw the club miss out on qualification for European football for the first time in 25 years.

The club were prepared to give him a free pass over his first 18 months at the helm due to the situation he inherited and the flux caused by the pandemic, but this is no longer the case.

A report in Eurosport outlines that the club will reassess his position in December, by which time the club are expected to be challenging for European places in the table.

It is also said that the club’s style of football is important after the team came under criticism last year for a dour style of play with little imagination in the final third.

The club have heavily backed Arteta in the transfer market this summer with Ben White, Albert Sambi Lokonga and Nuno Tavares all added to the ranks.

Arsenal are also in advanced negotiations to sign playmaker Martin Odegaard from Real Madrid on a permanent basis and are also closing in on a deal for Sheffield United goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale.

That would take the club’s summer spending to around £140million – notably more than any other club in the Premier League this transfer window.

Such spending levels bring a degree of expectation and the club would not be willing for another season which the Gunners struggle to challenge the top teams in the league.

There is also said to be friction between Arteta and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who missed the opening day of the season defeat at Brentford.

It was officially reported that the club captain missed the trip to West London through injury but it is now suggested that there may have been a bigger factor at play.

Aubameyang and Arteta are said to be at odds at the moment, while Alexandre Lacazette – who also sat out the trip to Brentford – is also being linked with a move away from the club.

It has been a tough year for Arsenal fans following last season’s disappointing campaign and while the club have shown trust in their boss to this date, he is now expected to deliver results.
