Arsenal transfer round-up: Aubameyang criticised following new contract

The 2020/21 season is well and truly up and running, with the summer transfer window now in the rear view mirror.

There is, however, only a little over two months until the January transfer window opens and so speculation over deals that could be potentially down midway through the season continues to swirl.

Arsenal were busy in the summer, with Dani Ceballos lured back to the club on loan and Gabriel Magalhaes, Thomas Partey and Willian added to Mikel Arteta’s squad.

There are still some loose ends to be tied, though. And here are three of today’s most noteworthy Arsenal transfer stories.

Portuguese starlet’s father reflects on Arsenal offer

The father of Portuguese teenager Joelson Fernandes has reflected on Arsenal’s interest in his son over the summer, opening the lid on negotiations that took place with the club.

Speaking to O Democrata, via Sport Witness, Eusebio Mango Fernandes revealed the Gunners
made a bid for the 17-year-old attacker, with Ajax, Barcelona, Juventus, Liverpool and Manchester City also interested in the youngster.

Sporting rejected the Gunners’ bid, with Joelson eventually signing a new contract to stay in

“It was an extremely difficult and very complicated process, because there were tough moments in the negotiations for Joelson Fernandes to stay at Sporting,” said Fernandes.

“My wish was always for him to stay at the club, but due to his quality as a footballer, he had calls from several European clubs.

“Despite these very tempting offers, as an agent, I ended up dispensing with these invitations,
despite knowing that I needed those millionaire offers, but I thought that in life money isn’t
everything, because we must be aware that there’s a word called ‘gratitude’, for that, we are
grateful to Sporting for what they gave.”

Aubameyang criticised for poor form since signing new contract

Former Tottenham Hotspur striker Darren Bent has criticised Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang for his poor form since putting pen to paper on a new lucrative contract to keep him at Arsenal.

The Gabon forward was the subject of much speculation linking him with a move away from the Emirates Stadium this summer, but ended that last month by signing a new three-year contract worth £350,000-a-week.

Bent is concerned by what he has seen since then, though.

“It’s not the fact he hasn’t scored a goal, it’s the performances,” the former striker told talkSPORT.

“Before he signed his contract he was absolutely everywhere – running back, tracking back, putting tackles in, breaking forward. There was a real hunger and intensity to his game.

“At the minute, you can see there’s been a massive drop off. I don’t know if it coincided with the new contract, but you can tell that he’s not playing with the same intensity that he had before.

“When you focus so much on getting a new deal like Aubameyang did, you’ll run that extra yard and make that extra effort. When he sits down now and analyses his performances before and after the contract he’ll see that there’s been a massive change.”

Negotiations on the horizon for Arsenal midfielder

Lucas Torreira has settled quickly at Atletico Madrid since joining on loan on deadline day, and negotiations over a permanent transfer are now on the horizon.

According to Mundo Deportivo (via Sport Witness), the Spanish side hope to start talks with
Arsenal for the permanent signing of the Uruguayan midfielder after an impressive start to life at Atleti.

However, negotiations between the clubs could be interesting after the La Liga side were left
blindsided by the Gunners’ late move for Thomas Partey, with the Ghanian’s release clause
activated without Atleti being informed.

Torreira was surplus to requirements at the Emirates Stadium, falling down the pecking order
under Mikel Arteta before being sent out on loan.
