Arsenal transfer round-up: Relegation clause change, Ozil replacement identified

Arsenal have endured a nightmare start to the Premier League season, and are currently 15th in the table after losing eight of their 14 games and winning just four.

Under-fire Mikel Arteta is expected to be backed in the January window, as Gunners chiefs are still confident in his ability to turn things around.

But they’ll have to be active in the window in order to strengthen the squad for the second-half of the campaign.

Mesut Ozil could find himself involved in the senior squad in the new year, having been ousted from the Premier League and Europa League squads.

Arsenal are crying out for some creativity, and are expected to focus on attacking signings in January.

Here’s Wednesday’s Arsenal transfer round-up.

Gunners insert relegation clause into contracts

Arsenal chiefs have been forced to insert a reported 25 per cent pay cut into player’s contracts

Arsenal’s players will be forced to take a reported 25 per cent pay cut if they make an unexpected drop into the Championship.

The Gunners are just four points off the relegation zone after a dismal start to the season in which they’ve won just four of their 14 matches.

It is normal for such clauses to be in place among clubs battling the drop, though Arsenal were deemed top four hopefuls rather than potential candidates to go down when the campaign began.

And should the unthinkable occur, their current squad would stand to lose out on a combined total of £37.5million in wages, according to The Mail.

Ozil replacement identified as youngster promoted to first team

Catalin Cirjan is now training with the first team

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has given highly-rated midfielder Catalin Cirjan a chance to impress amid the club’s struggling form.

Cirjan was promoted to first-team training sessions ahead of the Carabao-Cup quarter-final clash on Tuesday night to continue his rapid rise through the ranks.

The 18-year-old Romanian plays as an attacking-midfielder, and could prevent the club from splashing millions on a replacement for Mesut Ozil if he continues to impress.

Gunners regretting summer departure?

Henrikh Mkhitaryan has impressed for Roma

“He is the kind of player who can fit in any team when he is at his best.”

Those were the words used by Arteta about Henrikh Mkhitaryan, who didn’t play a single game for the Spaniard after his predecessor Unai Emery deemed him surplus to requirements.

Mkhitaryan continues to impress for Roma, where he has scored eight and assisted the same amount in all competitions this season.

Could the Armenian have been the man to solve Arsenal’s problems of a lack of creativity? That is a mystery we’ll never know.
