Arsenal’s new director of football has been hired to aid Arteta in two key ways

Arsenal’s new director of football operations Richard Garlick has been brought in to take care of two key jobs, according to the club.

Garlick, who was previously at West Brom for eight years, will take care of all football operations in the first team and academy, and handle all player contract management and relationships with football’s governing bodies.

Garlick will reduce the workload on both technical director Edu, as well as Gunners boss Mikel Arteta, allowing the latter more time to work on improving performances on the pitch.

Arsenal announced the appointment on Thursday in a statement reading: “Richard Garlick is joining Arsenal as director of football operations.

“Richard, who is currently director of football at the Premier League and was previously director of football administration at West Bromwich Albion, will join the club in the coming months.

“He will be a member of the Arsenal executive team and will be working closely with technical director Edu, manager Mikel Arteta and academy manager Per Mertesacker.

“His responsibilities will include football operations in the first team and academy, all player contract management, and relationships with football’s governing bodies.

“Richard, a qualified solicitor specialising in sports law, has been at the Premier League since 2018. He was previously at West Bromwich Albion for eight years.”

Arsenal have struggled this season and were being dragged into a relegation battle before winning three matches on the bounce.

The Gunners are next in action this Thursday night when they play host to Roy Hodgson’s Crystal Palace at the Emirates.
