Arsenal transfer rumours: Lacazette for Abraham?

Mikel Arteta has ruled out Granit Xhaka leaving Arsenal saying he is a “key member of our squad”.

Xhaka has been linked with a move away from the Gunners all summer and was close to joining Roma just a few weeks back – but he’s not going anywhere now.

Arsenal were looking for around £18million for the midfielder but the Serie A giants were unwilling to meet their valuation.

Xhaka is said to have even agreed on personal teams with Jose Mourinho’s side but Roma’s unwillingness to stump up the cash saw Arsenal slam on the brakes.

Arsenal were beaten 2-1 by Chelsea in a friendly at the Emirates on Sunday afternoon.

Switzerland midfielder Xhaka scored an equaliser for the Gunners after coming off the bench in the second half to head home from a corner after finding space in the box.

His goal was unable to inspire Arsenal to victory, with Tammy Abraham restoring Chelsea’s lead moments later after Kai Havertz broke the deadlock for the Blues.

But his goal showed his importance to Arsenal, something Arteta was quick to point out after the match.

Speaking to the press, the Spaniard ruled out Xhaka leaving Arsenal this month, saying: “Granit is going to stay with us. He is a key member of our squad.”

Sunday marked new Arsenal signing Ben White’s first appearance in a Gunners shirt and he performed well in the 45 minutes he was on the pitch, clearing the ball off the line on one occasion.

Arteta said of the £50million signing from Brighton that he is the kind of player Arsenal have needed for years.

Gunners midfielder Thomas Partey picked up a knock in the first half against Chelsea following a collision with Ruben Loftus-Cheek.

The Ghanian was forced to make way, and Arteta admitted he is worried about the midfielder following a conversation with the club’s medical team.

“I just had a talk with the doctor,” Arteta told the press. “He’ll have a scan tomorrow. At the moment it’s not looking good.”

Arsenal play one final friendly against rivals Tottenham on August 8 before their season gets underway against newly-promoted Brentford at the Community Stadium.
