ina Asher-Smith made a triumphant return to the track as she claimed victory in the women’s 60m final at the World Athletics Indoor Tour event in Germany.
Britain’s fastest woman recorded a second world-leading time of 7.08seconds in Karlsruhe on Friday night – matching a personal best in the 60m and falling only narrowly shy of Asha Philip‘s British record in her first event of the year.
Reigning 200m world champion Asher-Smith had earlier cruised through the heats in an impressive time of 7.11secs on her first indoor appearance for three years.
The 25-year-old had not competed internationally since a memorable World Championships in Doha in October 2019 after the coronavirus decimated last year’s global athletics calendar and forced the Tokyo Olympics to be postponed by 12 months.
She is now hoping to build towards the rescheduled Games – the fate of which remains uncertain – with an indoor campaign that will continue in Dusseldorf on Sunday and hopefully end at the European Championships in Poland in March.
