Ashley Cole agrees with Piers Morgan over Arsenal’s “warrior”

Arsenal have had little to cheer about this season after their Europa League exit last week piled more misery onto their disappointing domestic form, but Cole pointed out one positive

Ashley Cole feels Arsenal have found the “warrior” they need in left-back Kieran Tierney.

The Scottish defender is thriving in the role once filled so expertly by Cole for the Gunners and has earned rave reviews for his performances this season.

Tierney has been one of the few positives from a disappointing campaign for Arsenal, with many tipping the 23-year-old as a future club captain, including ardent fan and TV personality Piers Morgan.

“Arsenal are a different team and different mentality with this ferocious Scottish warrior in the side,” Morgan tweeted back in February. “One of our best signings for a long time: @kierantierney1.”

And Cole – who played more than 200 times for the Gunners – was in full agreement.

“When he’s in the team they’re a different team,” Cole told Sky Sports. “He’s willing to defend, he’s that kind of leader and warrior in the team that they need.

Ashley Cole praised Kieran Tierney’s leadership qualities at Arsenal

“There were question marks over him and his ability to come from Scotland to the Premier League but he’s adapted well. He’s got those leadership qualities which is needed with the younger players in there [Arsenal’s squad].

“If he doesn’t play they miss him down that left side. He can attack but ultimately he can defend which is a plus.”

Tierney’s time at the club has been hampered by several injuries but there is little doubt he is one of the first names on the teamsheet for Mikel Arteta, either as a defender in the back three or four, or in the more advanced wing-back slot.

He could yet have extra competition for his place next season however, if Arsenal manage to land reported target Ryan Bertrand, who is set to leave Southampton on a free transfer in the summer.

Yet Jamie Redknapp feels the supporters at the Emirates have already taken to their current no.3.

“I do like Tierney, he’s a bit of a throwback,” Redknapp said. “He gets forward, loves a tackle, comes out for winter games with a t-shirt on, he does’t care – and that’s why the Arsenal fans adore him. He’s a really good left-back.”
