Ashley Cole lands first major coaching role as England U21s assistant

Former defender Cole currently works at Chelsea with the club’s academy, while also taking part in some punditry work.

He has now been snapped up by the Football Association, who have appointed him as assistant to new England Under-21 boss Carsley.

Cole will continue to work with Chelsea’s academy and will combine his England duties with that.

The 40-year-old is keen to make his name as a coach and landing a role with the Under-21s is a big step up the ladder for him.

Carsley has been named England Under-21 boss after previously impressing in his role with the Under-20s.

The former midfielder takes over from Aidy Boothroyd, who stood down in April after the Under-21s finished bottom of their group at the European Championship.
