Atletico 2-3 Liverpool: Salah rescues Reds after Griezmann’s comeback brace and red

ohamed Salah’s penalty secured a huge three points for Liverpool on a rollercoaster evening at Atletico Madrid.

Referee Daniel Siebert sent off Antoine Griezmann after the striker’s brace levelled the score, before overturning his initial decision to hand the hosts a late spot-kick in the Champions League epic.

Liverpool flew out the traps and led thanks to a familiar source in unfamiliar fashion. Salah danced through the defence and had a shot trickle in via a deflection – with it unclear if James Milner or Geoffrey Kondogbia turned it in.

After only 13 minutes, the visitors doubled their advantage through Naby Keita. A poor clearance bounced invitingly up for the midfielder, who lashed it into the top corner to send the away end wild.

But the scenes created by the Reds fans would be nothing compared to the wild bouncing of the Rojiblancos faithful only 20 minutes later.

Having barely featured in the game to this point, the hosts got on the board via Griezmann’s deft tap onto Koke’s drilled shot-cross into a mass of players.

The French striker then popped up to make use of some surprisingly sluggish Liverpool defending, picking up Joao Felix’s pass to slide in the leveller and send the Wanda Metropolitano celebrations into a different dimension.

Alisson Becker, earlier called into action to deny Griezmann, smothered a Yannick Carrasco effort after more Atletico energy caused Liverpool problems after the break.

But the hosts were cut down to size when Griezmann was dismissed for a high-foot challenge on Roberto Firmino. While he arguably did not mean to connect with the Brazilian’s face, he was out of control and fortunately did not leave as big a mark on his opponent as the contact suggested.

The incident did little to quell the home support, now fully backing their team after opting to jeer the players choosing to take a knee earlier in the night, and James Milner was booked after downing Kieran Trippier – when a red was the home field’s choice.
