Olivier Giroud produced another Champions League special to hand Chelsea the advantage in their last-16 tie with Atletico Madrid after a 1-0 first-leg win in Bucharest.
The Blues forward grabbed his sixth goal in the competition this season with an overhead kick in the 68th minute but it was only awarded after a lengthy VAR review.
It was thoroughly deserved for Thomas Tuchel’s side, who dominated for large parts and extended their unbeaten run under the German to eight games since his arrival on January 26.
A negative was bookings for Mason Mount and Jorginho, which rules them out of the second leg and will force a midfield reshuffle from Tuchel.
However, Atletico boss Diego Simeone knows his team will need to score at least twice next month to go through in normal time, and Chelsea look odds-on to reach the quarter-finals.

That’s a wrap
Thanks for joining us this evening – and we can imagine the Chelsea fans out there are still celebrating.
We will be back early on Wednesday morning with more reaction, news and analysis to a fine Champions League win for Tuchel’s Blues.
Tuchel rues suspensions for Jorginho, Mount
Thomas Tuchel admits Chelsea will be without two ‘crucial’ players for the second leg with Mason Mount and Jorginho suspended.
Tuchel said: “We will miss two crucial players, it makes things not easy for us.
But I am very happy with the performance of everybody, that includes Mason of course.
“Again, a good effort, a big effort, high work-rate, high intensity like we are used to when he plays like this. He has a big impact on our team.
“Honestly, we now play Man Utd, Everton, Liverpool and Leeds, it is good like this. We cannot get comfortable, we cannot get lazy. These games will push us to our limits, then we will think about our solutions for the second leg.”
Tuchel proud of ‘fantastic… disciplined’ result
Tuchel told BT Sport: “Fantastic result and fantastic goal.
“(It took) a lot of concentration. We wanted to dominate in the opponents’ half. That was the challenge, and to be aware of quick counter-attacks.
“It was a very disciplined performance. The team ethic was the basis of a big away win, but it’s only half-time.”
Giroud had ‘no clue’ about offside call
Giroud added: “I did not know what to think about the goal, I just focused on hitting the overhead kick and was pleased to see it go in.
“I had no clue about being offside. Mason Mount said he did not touch the ball. It’s good for the team, good for me.”
Giroud: We managed the game well
Blues match-winner Giroud told BT Sport: “We came here with strong intentions to play our game. We analysed how we could give them trouble offensively and we are very pleased with the win. I think it was a deserved win.
“We know the importance of the away go in European Cups. We managed the game well. We were confident. We faced a great team and we were very committed.”
Chelsea player ratings
Usurprisingly, Olivier Giroud scored an 8/10 from James Robson after that incredible winner – but two Chelsea defenders also impressed in particular tonight.

That’s a remarkable win for Chelsea. It wasn’t the prettiest, but you can’t blame them for that. They controlled possession and did the most to try to break the deadlock, even if the quality in the final third was lacking.
Still, it ended up being a wonderful goal that settled it and might just have put Chelsea on course for the quarters.
Full-time! Atletico Madrid 0-1 Chelsea
Chelsea have got the result! Atleti were far from their best, but that’s a real statement performance from the Blues – and a great win for Thomas Tuchel early in his Stamford Bridge career.
Not long left for Chelsea to hold on…
