Aymeric Laporte’s header earns Man City Carabao Cup success

Fans made a ‘massive difference’

Riyad Mahrez has hailed the return of supporters after almost 8,000 fans watched Manchester City win the Carabao Cup, with a 1-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur.

When asked about the fans in his post-match interview, Mahrez told Sky Sports: “Massive difference, it’s so good to have the fans back, the atmosphere, even with 8,000 fans is amazing and we’re looking forward to having more fans back.”

It was a view shared by Aymeric Laporte, who added: “We are so, so happy to see them here. There are a few of them, I think there could be more, but we are happy to have the fans here.”

Man City have now won four consecutive Carabao Cups, matching the record set by the great Liverpool side of the early 1980s.

And Mahrez admitted: “I don’t know (why City are so good in the Carabao Cup), we just, like the manager said, we focus on every competition we play in.

“Today was a final and in every final, you have to win, whether you play well or not and today I think we played well and we won.”
