Premier League clubs will not release players for games in red-list countries

Gareth Southgate is considering a call-up for Harvey Barnes as he prepares to name an enlarged squad for England’s World Cup qualifiers.

Southgate will name at least 25 players and possibly more for the three games with Hungary, Andorra and Poland with the expectation that he might lose players with internationals so early in the season.

England boss Southgate could then give a chance to Leicester winger Barnes who has been called up and capped in the past but has impressed since the summer, having missed out on the Euros through injury.

They do have injuries in that department as Marcus Rashford is out until October after shoulder surgery and Manchester City ’s Phil Foden will also be missing as he recovers from injury.

Manchester United star Jesse Lingard has also missed games after contracting Covid so has had limited chance to stake a claim after missing the final cut for the Euros.

Southgate looks set to recall Trent Alexander-Arnold who missed the summer because of injury in England’s final warm-up game.

There is also likely to be a chance for Mason Greenwood as the United forward has been in excellent form.

But having only played the final a few weeks ago, there is unlikely to be wholesale changes although Danny Ings could get a chance after starting well at Aston Villa.

Brighton ’s Adam Webster has also attracted admiring glances from scouting reports while Arsenal ’s £50m defender Ben White may be in if he returns a negative test in time, having tested positive for Covid.

Burnley keeper Nick Pope is also set to come back in after injury while Arsenal new boy Aaron Ramsdale is likely to be third choice at the expense of West Brom’s Sam Johnstone.

England’s fans have already been blocked from going to Hungary and Poland but both countries are on the amber list and therefore the squad will travel to and from in strict bubbles.
