Bernd Leno’s texts to Dortmund star amid rumours of summer transfer to Arsenal

Bernd Leno is looking to aid Arsenal’s pursuit of Julian Brandt after revealing he has been texting the Borussia Dortmund star.

The playmaker is a summer target for the Gunners as Mikel Arteta eyes reinforcements.

Martin Odegaard has impressed during his loan spell from Real Madrid but a permanent deal may be beyond the north Londoners.

Los Blancos are eyeing a huge fee for the Norwegian which may price the Gunners out of a move.

Brandt is understood to have a £22m release clause which makes him far more affordable.

The 25-year-old is also thought to be open to a move away from the Bundesliga outfit and Leno is looking to persuade his compatriot to join him at the Emirates.

Julian Brandt is a Gunners target

He told Sport 1 : “I read the rumours with Arsenal and wrote him a few messages right away.

“I don’t know what is really there, but I would be happy if he would come.

“Julian is a good friend, we had a very good time in Leverkusen and privately we were often out for beers.

“Maybe we can experience that again in the future. He’s also invited to my wedding next year.”

Leno himself has reaffirmed his commitment to Arsenal after comments last week suggested he was eyeing a move away.

The goalkeeper is looking to help the Gunners return to the Champions League having moved to the club in 2018.

“I don’t want to flee here, I feel good and want to be successful again with Arsenal,” he said.

“Arsenal are a big club, which is extremely underestimated in Germany, there are many Arsenal fans all over the world.

“I still have a two-year contract and hope to play in the Champions League again with Arsenal.

“It is also clear that at some point in my career I want to do something different. So far I’ve played for two clubs.

“Maybe I’ll get the urge to play in another league again. Maybe in the south. But there is time, I’m still getting to the top goalkeeping age. But my focus is on Arsenal.”
