Best football bets and expert advice for Saturday 7 September

While the majority of domestic football has taken a back seat for the international break, there is still a busy Saturday schedule in the English Football League.

Our focus will be on games in League One and League Two as teams try to kick on after the first four matches of the season.

Bet of the day

Barrow to beat Swindon @ 3/4

Barrow have made a strong start to the League Two campaign, winning three of their opening four fourth-tier matches, and the Bluebirds look an excellent bet at home to struggling Swindon on Saturday.

Stephen Clemence’s men impressed when beating Port Vale and Crewe at Holker Street this term and the Cumbrians have also shown they can step up in class with little issue.

Barrow held Championship side Derby to a 0-0 draw in the EFL Cup before winning the match on penalties, and the Bluebirds gave top League One outfit Bolton plenty to think about in a 3-2 EFL Trophy defeat in midweek.

Swindon are without a win in their opening six matches of the season and the Robins have been hammered 4-0 by Walsall and 4-2 at Crawley.

The EFL Trophy offered little respite for Mark Kennedy’s men, who were beaten 2-1 at Exeter on Tuesday night and another disappointing result awaits the Robins.

Special of the day

Over 3.5 goals in Notts County v Accrington @ 11/10

Notts County are strongly fancied to get the better of Accrington on Saturday, but getting long on goals at Meadow Lane looks the better value play.

The Magpies have seen 18 goals scored in their last four matches, both of County’s two home matches have bust the 3.5 mark and Stuart Maynard’s men have hit the net six times in their first two Meadow Lane matches of the season.

Accrington, who have conceded 18 goals in their six competitive matches this season, are going to have a tough time keeping Notts County at bay.

Stanley shipped three goals against Tranmere, Harrogate and Newport, and they allowed four on the opening day at Doncaster and Stockport blasted another four goals past John Doolan’s men at the Crown Ground in midweek.

That said, Accrington have scored in all but one of their six games this term and they look capable of contributing to what should be a goal-crazy contest.

Long shot of the day

Barnsley to win both halves v Bristol Rovers @ 19/5

Barnsley were seriously impressive when winning 3-0 at Crawley last weekend and the Tykes could give Bristol Rovers a rough ride at Oakwell.

Darrell Clarke’s men put up an expected goals tally of 3.53 and hit 15 shots at Crawley last time out and that followed another impressive display when they beat Championship side Sheffield United 1-0 in the EFL Cup.

Bristol Rovers are yet to win on the road this season and the form of last weekend’s 2-0 League One victory over Cambridge is pretty flimsy.

At 19/5, Barnsley can be backed to have the quality and attacking firepower to win both halves of this Oakwell contest.
