Blow for Arsenal as Xhaka ruled out for three months with knee injury

The midfielder limped off during Sunday’s 3-1 win at Emirates Stadium and Arsenal have confirmed he “suffered a significant injury to his medial knee ligament”.

Xhaka does not require surgery.

The 29-year-old suffered the injury in the second half against Spurs when Lucas Moura fell onto his knee.

The news is a blow to Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta after Xhaka had impressed during the win over Tottenham.

“Further to injuring his right knee during Sunday’s match against Tottenham Hotspur, assessments and scans have confirmed that Granit Xhaka suffered a significant injury to his medial knee ligament,” Arsenal confirmed on their website.

“A specialist consultation took place in London on Tuesday evening which has determined that Granit does not require surgery.

“Granit’s recovery and rehabilitation programme will start immediately and we are aiming for him to be back in action in approximately three months.

“Everyone at the club will now be supporting and working hard with Granit to get him back on the pitch as soon as possible.”

The Tottenham game was Xhaka’s first game since the end of August as he had been serving a three-match ban following a red card against Manchester City. During that time, Xhaka contracted Covid-19 while on international duty with Switzerland but he had made a full recovery to start against Spurs and did well in the game.

Xhaka’s absence could present an opportunity for summer signing Albert Sambi Lokonga. The Belgium international has impressed when given a chance this season, while Ainsley Maitland-Niles and Mohamed Elneny will hope to play more now too.
