Brentford issue decisive Toney transfer update following promotion

Brentford’s Ivan Toney has certainly caught the eye in the Bees’ memorable campaign.

The centre-forward hit a staggering 33 goals across the entire season – the last of which set the club on their way to a 2-0 win over Swansea in the Championship play-off final.

It means Thomas Frank’s side will be in the Premier League next season and a first top flight campaign in 74 years now beckons.

Many Brentford fans are still wondering whether Toney will be there to spearhead that campaign. There’s been plenty of speculation in recent months and it was assumed that had their promotion bid not been successful that he would have been sold to a top flight side.

Now though, a senior figure at the West London club has confirmed their stance on the 25-year-old’s future.

Brentford’s co-director of football Rasmus Ankerson told Sky Sports : “Ivan has done amazingly this season and if we hadn’t have gone up then there would have been lots of Premier League interest in him.

“Obviously now it’s a different situation. We would have had to look at that, but that’s not a new thing for Brentford.

“Season after season, player trading has been a big part of our business model.

“We have to buy cheap, sell expensive and then reinvest the money into improving the team. It’s not going to be a very different Brentford that we see in the future.

“Ivan though, like he said after the game, can’t wait to start scoring goals in the Premier League. I’m sure that will be for us.”

That will be music to the ears of Bees’ fans who cannot wait to get started against the big guns of English football.

Toney remained relatively coy post-match about his future, but he did say: “I’m a Premier League striker now, I can’t wait to score goals in the Prem.”
