‘Brilliant’ Bale can ‘elevate Tottenham to another level’ this season

The Welsh forward returned to north London this summer on a season-long loan from Real Madrid, seven years after leaving Spurs in a then world-record deal worth £85million.

It has taken Bale a while to get up to speed back at Tottenham due to a knee injury he was carrying when he arrived back at the club in September and a lack of first-team football in Spain.

However, the 31-year-old is now fully fit and, after a couple of substitute appearances and Europa League outings, made his second Premier League debut for Spurs in the 1-0 win at West Brom prior to the international break.

Tottenham’s new front three – consisting of Bale, Heung-min Son and match-winner Harry Kane – did not quite spark into life at The Hawthorns, but former Real winger Steve McManaman believes Jose Mourinho is primed to reap the benefits of Bale’s return if the latter can steer clear of further injury trouble.

“I think he’ll have a huge impact because he hasn’t lost any of his pace,” LaLiga ambassador McManaman said at an event for LiveScore, according to PA Sport.

“I know he’s had a few injuries at Real Madrid, but he also wasn’t injured for a lot of the time – he just wasn’t playing. I think he’s ready to and has a lot of points to prove.

“I think it’s a brilliant signing for Tottenham. When you think of Harry Kane, Heung-min Son, and then you throw Gareth into the mix as well, it automatically lifts that starting XI to another level.

“If he stays fit now and he plays 40 games for Tottenham, he’ll definitely score 20-odd goals, and you just cannot buy those types of numbers.

“The fact that Tottenham have done a great deal bringing him, I think it’s wonderful business I really do. If he stays fit, he’ll certainly elevate Tottenham to another level in the Premier League and other competitions this season.”
