Bruno Fernandes has said Manchester United have to ‘grow up’ and continue to get better, despite thrashing Real Sociedad 4-0 in the Europa League.
United were handed a tricky tie on paper, facing the Champions League chasing Spaniards.
But Fernandes put on yet another dazzling display to all but confirm his side’s place in the last-16.
Despite playing at Juventus ’ Allianz Stadium, the game was technically Sociedad’s home tie, but were blown away by the Red Devils, with Fernandes at the heart of it.
The Portuguese superstar netted his 21st of the season in the first half, before doubling their advantage before the hour mark.
Marcus Rashford made it three eight minutes later, before Daniel James’ late goal put an extra shine on the result.
United looked back to their counter-attacking best in Turin, after some below-par performances in the Premier League.
Fernandes claimed that the tie is still alive, despite taking the huge advantage into next week’s meeting at Old Trafford.
“The result of course [is pleasing], it’s about winning, we want to win the games,” he told BT Sport. “We did everything well. The result is on our side but we still have the second leg and a tough game to do again at home,” he added.
“We know 4-0 is a good result, but we have to be aware of what Sociedad can do and be ready for the second leg.
“We don’t have to look at the results, we have to look at the performance. We know we don’t perform well in some games, but still in some games we don’t get the result we want and we perform well.”
The 26-year-old has previously admitted his one regret at United so far, is the failure to pick up any silverware. And he has warned his teammates that they will have to keep improving if they are to help him achieve his No.1 target this season.
“We need to understand that we have to grow up, we have to get better and better,” Fernandes added. “Of course the most important is the results that give you a bit of confidence to go into the next game and try to win again.
“My target is to score the most goals I can and assist my team-mates to score to. The position I play is to do that, assist and score when you can. The most important target is the trophies. Trophies will be more important than scoring goals.”
