Canelo Alvarez to fight Callum Smith on December 19 as Brit lands huge showdown

British star Callum Smith will get his shot at pound-for-pound great Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez next month.

The unbeaten Smith, 30, has been selected by Alvarez for his return to the ring more than a year after he knocked out Sergey Kovalev in Las Vegas.

The Mexican superstar was linked with a host of fights but it is Smith who has got the nod and will travel to the USA for the biggest fight of his career.

Alvarez recently parted company with Golden Boy Promotions and streaming service DAZN.

Eddie Hearn and Matchroom Boxing have now confirmed they will promote the huge bout in Texas on December 19 for Smith’s WBA and Ring world super-middleweight titles.

Hearn’s involvement means Alvarez will remain fighting on DAZN despite his recent dispute.

Canelo, 53-1-2, has not lost since his defeat to Floyd Mayweather back in 2013.

He has knocked out all three of his British challengers – Amir Khan, Liam Smith and Rocky Fielding – in recent years.

Victory over Daniel Jacobs last May saw him add the IBF middleweight title to his WBA (Super), WBC and The Ring middleweight belts.

He stepped up to light-heavyweight and won the WBO title with his 11th round stoppage of the experienced Kovalev last time out.

He will now look to add more belts to his collection against Smith, who defended his WBA (Super) and The Ring super-middleweight belts with a controversial points win over John Ryder last November.

Ryder was in the frame to fight Canelo, as were fellow Brits Billy Joe Saunders and Chris Eubank Jr.

But Smith gets the chance to pull off a huge upset and extend his perfect record to 28-0.
