Carragher fires Coutinho transfer message to Liverpool after Chelsea loss

Jamie Carragher believes Liverpool are suffering due to their lack a natural number 10 after Chelsea inflicted a fifth successive Anfield defeat on Jurgen Klopp’s side.

The Reds struggled to create clear-cut chances in their 1-0 defeat at Anfield, which left their top-four hopes hanging by a thread.

And Carragher feels the soon-to-be deposed Premier League champions need a player in the style of Philippe Coutinho.

Coutinho left for Barcelona in January 2018, and the former Liverpool defender says Klopp’s side are now suffering after not replacing him with a similar-style player.

The Reds are struggling to press with the same intensity as previous seasons, and Carragher feels they need more creativity in the final third.

Georginio Wijnaldum up against Chelsea goalscorer Mason Mount

“I watched Gini Wijnaldum in the second-half get done on a one-two, they want to do things and they just can’t get there,” Carragher told Sky Sports .

“Jurgen Klopp famously said, his pressing is better than any number 10, but when you watch Liverpool, you feel like they need a number 10 – they need that type of player because the pressing isn’t there.

“I don’t know if it’s the same players playing week-in, week-out, off the back of four or five years of high-intensity football. Who knows what it is?

“We’ll maybe nearly get to the bottom of it next season when we see the crowds back and maybe more of a normal season, but they just don’t seem right in terms of energy and pace at the moment.

Liverpool didn’t replace Philippe Coutinho with a similar-style No10 when he left

“Teams have come and defended deep and they haven’t got anyone between the lines to play that pass, they have Coutinho who went and they built in other areas.

“I’m not saying they should go and buy that, but without the actual pressing quality they have now in terms of creating chances, they haven’t really got anyone who can make that final pass.”

Mason Mount scored the only goal at Anfield after team-mate Timo Werner had an earlier effort ruled out after a VAR check on a marginal offside.

Liverpool’s defeat leaves them in seventh place after they were overtaken by Everton, while Chelsea climbed into fourth place.
