Carragher thinks Salah will stay at Liverpool as Ronaldo comparison made

Jamie Carragher expects Mohamed Salah to be a Liverpool player next season despite his recent comments about his future.

Salah helped Liverpool to a thumping 3-0 win over Manchester United on Sunday, scoring a goal as well as assisting the other two Reds goals, which were scored by Luis Diaz.

But it was what Salah said after the game at Old Trafford which drew bigger headlines with the 32-year-old dropping a big hint that this season would be his last at Liverpool.

“I had a good summer, I had a long time to work on myself and think positively because, as you know, this is my last year at the club,” Salah said.

“I just want to enjoy it, and I don’t want to think about it.

“I feel free to play football, and we’ll see what happens next year.”

Salah’s Anfield contract expires in the summer, meaning he’d be able to leave Merseyside on a free transfer, and the Egyptian says the club hasn’t approached him over a new deal.

“Heading into the game, I said ‘look, this could be the last time [at Old Tafford]’,” Salah continued.

“Nobody has spoken to me about a contract, so I’ll play my last season, and see at the end of the season.

“It’s not up to me, it’s up to the club, but we will see.”

Liverpool fans far and wide will be fretting at the prospect of seeing one of the club’s greatest ever players leave for nothing, however, Carragher is more relaxed about the situation.

Saudi Arabia is the most likely destination for Salah should he leave Liverpool, but Carragher believes the player has plenty to give in the game and won’t want to take a step down any time soon.

“I think Mo Salah is obsessed. A little bit like Cristiano Ronaldo in terms of scoring records, appearance records, longevity in the game,” Carragher told Sky Sports.

“For most of us, when you get to 35 you’re sort of done in football but I think with the way that lad looks after himself, I think he’s probably looking at playing until he’s 40 or certainly late 30s.

“I don’t think the Saudi situation is on the cards next season for Mo Salah; he’s too good a player. He’s playing in the best league in the world for one of the biggest clubs in the world.

“I think, whether it’s this season or another two seasons down the line, he’s alongside Sir Kenny Dalglish and Steven Gerrard in terms of the top players to ever play for Liverpool.

“He’s possibly one of the best wingers, or best wide players, we’ve seen in this league.”

“Of course you fight to keep him,” Carragher added. “It’s not about throwing the money at him. When you get a new contract it’s not about what you’ve done in the past, it’s about what you’re going to do in the future.

“For most players when they get to their mid 30s you can’t do what you’ve done before. He might be different.

“That’s where I think the argument will be. Of course Liverpool will want to keep him and Virgil van Dijk.

“It will probably be about wages, are they still on the same wage that they’re at? Because in the next two or three years will they be the same player? That’s the debate that will be had.

“I’ll be very surprised if Mo Salah isn’t playing for Liverpool next season because I think he’ll want to blitz every record in the club’s history.”
