Oliveira was initially expected to fight Poirier after his victory over Conor McGregor at UFC 264, but has now admitted a potential fight against Diaz ‘would make a lot of money’
UFC lightweight champion Charles Oliveira has admitted Dustin Poirier could choose a money-spinning clash with Nate Diaz over a title shot.
Poirier defeated Irish superstar Conor McGregor in a trilogy bout at UFC 264 with an opening round stoppage, which cemented his place as the leading contender for a shot at Oliveira’s world title belt.
‘The Diamond’ has previously downplayed rumours linking him to a clash with returning Diaz, but has refused to completely rule out the possibility of the pair meeting admitting ‘anything is possible’.
And the Brazilian champion has admitted that a shot at his title could be avoided by Poirier as a potential fight with Diaz would make ‘a lot of money’.
“Today nobody wants to know about a belt, they don’t want to know about a belt,” Oliveira told Ag. Fight.

“They want to know about ‘money’, about money in your pocket. The fight against Conor made a lot of money for Dustin Poirier, a fight against Nate will make a lot of money too.
“We are human beings. It depends a lot on each person. I would rather fight for the belt than for the money.
“I had a focus. I wanted to be UFC champion. Today I’m UFC champion, I want to make money, I want to have money in my pocket.”
Oliveira defeated Michael Chandler back in May of this year to claim the vacant lightweight world title, which he expected to defend against the winner of Poirier’s trilogy with McGregor.
And despite theoretically having to face the leading contender next, Oliveira has admitted that he would like to start ‘making money’ but is willing to take on any competitor that ‘challenges him’ for his belt.

“So it depends a lot, if Dustin agrees to fight Diaz, is he wrong? No, it’s not wrong. He is right,” Oliveira continued.
“You have to see what’s good for him. Everyone has to choose what is right for them. They considered my fight against Diaz and I said that if it was for the belt, I would fight. Before I fight for the belt. I had a focus, which was to fight for the belt.
“A lot of people said to me: ‘This fight will make you a lot of money’. And I said: ‘Okay, but money is not the focus now, I want to be UFC champion’. Today I’m UFC champion, now I want to make money.
“Everyone has a way to choose. Today I am the champion. I’m not worried about who will be or who will not be, who has to chase who will fight for the title, it’s them, it’s not me.”
Diaz revealed in a recent cryptic message on his Instagram that he is likely to be returning to the cage, after previously citing December as a potential date for his next fight.
But Poirier has recently denied any current talks of the pair planning a contest insisting Diaz is selling ‘wolf tickets’, in addition to revealing that he is ‘not waiting’ for a potential fourth fight with McGregor.
