Chelsea hand Lukaku chance to emulate his idol Drogba

The Belgium international has signed a five-year contract worth around £212,000-a-week before bonuses.

His move comes seven years after he left Chelsea for Everton in a £28million deal in the search of regular first team football.

He had previously been seen as the natural successor to Drogba – who remains a mentor – when an academy starlet.

Now he returns as the finished article and a club-record signing.

Thomas Tuchel and Roman Abramovich believe the 28-year-old could be the difference in their pursuit of the Premier League title after he established himself as one of the deadliest strikers in world football at Inter Milan.

Lukaku fired the Italian giants to the Serie A title last season and scored 64 goals in 95 games in two years at the San Siro to banish memories of the miserable end to his Manchester United career.

Lukaku said: “I’m happy and blessed to be back at this wonderful club. It’s been a long journey for me: I came here as a kid who had a lot to learn, now I’m coming back with a lot of experience and more mature.

“The relationship I have with this club means so much to me, as you know. I have supported Chelsea as a kid and now to be back and try to help them win more titles is an amazing feeling.

“The way the club is going fits my ambitions perfectly at 28 and just coming off winning Serie A. I think this opportunity comes at the right time and hopefully we can have a lot of success together.”

Lukaku had long-dreamed of filling Drogba’s boots at Chelsea.
